My father gave me his Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in .220 Swift caliber before he left this world for a better place. When he gave it to me, it had a fixed 8X Unertl on it that I really never cared much for. I sold the 8X and purchased a 20X Unertl Target scope because I felt it should still have a scope from that era mounted on it. I won the 20X on eBay and paid well for it. However, when it showed up at my door, someone had relieved the rear mount in what appears to be an attempt to allow the previous guns bolt handle to work freely. Do any of you know where I can purchase another rear mount that has not been altered?

Second, it doesn’t seem to want to fit on the bases that are (were) on the gun. I believe the mounts on the gun are of Weaver variety while the scope mounts are proprietary POSA mounts. Do any of you know what bases I need to complete this transfer and where I might be able to purchase them? Thank you in advance for your responses.

Re: Need Some Help Mounting My Unertl Scope

The bases in your pictures are not Weaver bases. They are standard Unertl type bases that will fit a standard Unertl Target scope. The POSA base has a square notch where the standard base has that small semi circular finger nail slot.

It would probably be easier to just change your bases to POSA bases but you might have trouble finding a dovetail front POSA base.

You could also change the mounts on the scope to POSA but that is a little more work and usually requires disassembly of the scope.

If you want an easy user serviceable solution I recommend changing bases to POSA style.

If you want everything to be period correct and visually perfect then you will have to change the mounts on the scope.

There are places that make custom Unertl scope blocks. You can choose many options including screw/dovetail mount, round bottom or flat bottom base, and many different heights. The heights will adjust the total height of the scope over the rifle and can help with cheek rest/comb height as well as placing the rear micrometer mount in your desired sweet spot. If the front base is too high then your rear will have minimal elevation available and visa versa. Your front base is about as low as you can go and you might need a slightly taller one to get bolt handle clearance.

Just google "Unertl scope blocks" and I am sure you will find something. I will do a search and post back here if/when I find someone.

Good luck

Re: Need Some Help Mounting My Unertl Scope

Your Unertl DOES NOT have the need for Posa based based on the pics above.

Your pics above don't show any modifications to the parts in the pics from my understanding of them.

Not really sure what you are asking for.

The guys I know that stock the most bases for these old scopes are Champion's Choice. Give them a call and talk to Homer or Chuck.

There are a few Unertl/other brands of RTB scope collectors/repairers/resellers around these days, but I can't think of their names off the top of my head. Google should find them though. They used to be listed in the back of Precision Shooting Magazine.

The close up of the rear mount has a notch filed into it. If you imagine past the glare you can see where half of the name Unertl has been filed off.

Re: Need Some Help Mounting My Unertl Scope

Thank you for your responses! Weaver” was my uninformed term for the Unertl “Target Type” mount. I was under the impression that the POSA type mounts split at the base (as mine are) and the Target Type were not split. Please see the photo below and tell me what you think.

Re: Need Some Help Mounting My Unertl Scope

All my Unertls right now are standards so I am going a bit from memory. The best way to tell if you have POSA mounts is to look at the tips of the screws on the mounts. A round cylinder with a matching finger nail slit to fit into your rifle base is standard. A square tip is a POSA.

I can tell you I have never seen a standard mount with a cut all the way through it.

The way those mounts appear to be cut up I would not trust anything. They very well may be a standard style and you just have to pry it apart a little to let it slide over the bases on your rifle. Try it and be careful.

Dieselten:

Based on the photo below from the web site that you have recommended, it would appear that I have the POSA mounts. Or at least that’s the way it appears to me based solely on the split to the right of the centerline of each mount.
