Around a year ago I built a Spikes Mid Length. It was my first build and I really enjoyed it.

I have always been a hunter all my life and was in the military for a stint. In the meantime I have built a Savage 308 into a great shooting precision rifle that I hope to do a few F Class comps with this year. This now has a Vortex Viper 6x20x44 on it.

Enough of the pics but that lays down the ground work of my question. After building that Savage I love to shoot precision/tight groups/long range now. I roll my own ammo for both. My question to you guys is what do I need to do to my AR to really get the most out of it as far as shooting nice tight groups? I really dont want a whole new upper, etc. Should I cut off the FSB with a dremmel or hack saw and put a tube on it for handguard? Almost all precision AR's that I see do not have a Fixed FSB. I would like to set it up the best way possible to support a Harris as the Magpul handguard has alot of slop and play in it. I would wait a while, but, eventually buy a bull barrel for it.

So, lay it out there for me and let me know what I should do to get this thing set up for the type of shooting I now want to do with it.

Thanks for your help.

Also, would it be worth it to sell my upper and use that towards an upper already set up in this fashion? I was looking at the RRA Varmint A4. Anybody know much about them being shooters or not or anyhing else out there in the price range? Thanks.

Re: Need some help on setting up my current AR to SPR

Get a lowpro gas block, free floating handguard, and decent ammunition (see 69gr and/or 77gr Match) and shoot from there.

I did that and haven't changed anything else. It will shoot under 1MOA with a milspec standard crap trigger and 69gr SMK loads. I'm running a 16" DD 1:7 CHF barrel. Your results/mileage/accuracy may vary.

Edit; run some Match through as is now to get a good idea where it is, so if/when you change things up, you have an idea where it came from, so to speak.

Not bad at all; check out some YouTube videos on the subject and you too can be YouTube armorer:) there are some poly type jigs for helping u support the gas/sight while knocking out the pins, not required but can help.

Matt

And nice looking rigs

You would have to hammer out the pins holding the front sight to remove it then remove the handguards + barrel nut parts. Then you can install your new parts.

You will need (at the very least) an action block, vise, armorer's wrench, hammer and punch.

I wouldn't expect sub moa out of it though. 1.5 is more reasonable.

If you want an SPR upper then you could probably sell your upper for 500-600 and spend maybe 750-800 building one. So the cost to swap handguards vs. selling what you have would be about the same but it would probably be more accurate at the cost of a bit more weight.

^ This right here.

Re: Need some help on setting up my current AR to SPR

Sounds like my best bet may be to sell my upper. Can you guys point me in the right direction for a SPR upper? I just want a list or manufactures that I can go to their website and look them over. Thanks,

Re: Need some help on setting up my current AR to SPR

Check out Centurion Arms, I just recently picked up a VLTOR VIS 3 DMR, on sale. It uses their SPR barrel, good stuff. It's also a little bit less expensive than their SPR uppers.

Re: Need some help on setting up my current AR to SPR

I usually google around looking at other people's builds (just google search for my spr rifle/my recce build blah blah blah) and when I see something that I like I slap together my own version of it using parts from Rainierarms and JSESurplus mainly.

If you want ready made Bravocompany is great also I think there is a guy on this site that builds (specialized dynamics?).

FWIW I've had lots of different rifles but my current one w/16" rainier ultra match is my favorite of all time. Light, compact, stupid accurate.

Re: Need some help on setting up my current AR to SPR

A good barrel, faced off square upper receiver where the barrel extension mates up, and loc-tite the gas block, and between the barrel extension and the upper. Then mount a decent free float tube on the rifle, and almost all of them will shoot well. If you skimp on the barrel, don't expect wonderful accuracy, but a run-of-the-mill barrel properly mounted will usually shoot MOA when fed good ammo. Other thinks that help are a good trigger, and properly crowned barrel, and muzzle device.
