I need some help with my PC in .223. I can get it to shoot 77smk very well pretty much 1/2 moa rifle with that load. Problem is anything else is not very good. It groups right around a inch with anything else. 55gr bullets are even larger. 69gr smk work decent but not great. The rife wants to shoot triangle shaped groups except for the 77smk. I have a PC in .308 and that rifle will shoot anything from 130gr ttsx to 175gr smk into very small groups. the .223 is getting me down. rifle has around 200 to 250 rds through it. any advice would be great.

are you getting groups that are bad or inconsistant? are they good starting and get bad? also are you handloading or are these store bought different weights that you are trying?

Re: Need some help with Savage PC .223

The groups are just bad, the loads that it shoots good are very consistant. I have tried different factory ammo like remington premier match 62gr, and federal loaded with 69smk and it does not shoot well. The load the shoots the best is 24.5gr of varget with a 77smk in LC brass at 2.260coal. I have tried loading 55gr to 77gr bullets with the 69 and 77 giving best results. My twist is 1/9 but it acts like it is faster with the exception it wont shoot barnes 70grttsx bullets at all, I figure they are to long to stabalize.

Some barrels are just particular. Are you trying different powders with your bullets or are you staying with the same powder? I have learned with mine that it likes a certain FPS. And as long as I stay around the FPS I'm good. So for instance I may have to slow down the smaller bullets or speed up the bigger bullets to get the right accuracy. It's all trial and error and you need alot of different powders until you find what works.

Good luck,

Thanks, I will keep working at it. Iam happy i have one good shooting load its just easier to find the lighter weight bullets in my area. The .308 version of this rifle has spoiled me. I have been using Re15 and varget with some 335, this rifle does not like what Iam doing with the 335, and shoots the re15, and varget pretty much the same.

Try some 3031. Not the fastest but for me it works the best. Don't know why but it just does. Pay more attention also to you case length. And are you using a neck coalating die or a full size resizer. Make sure you use the neck coalating die because it will do more just resizing the neck than almost anything else.

Good luck,
Merritt
