Looking to hire a car from LAX in early February coming. I need to fit four adults and two kids (8 and 11) plus baggage. Will be using it for about a week around LA then a few days in Vegas before swapping to a smaller vehicle for just the two of us. I have been looking at a Chevy Pacifica or a Suburban. Not really sure of the luggage space based on pictures. Am I on the right track or are there better options?

Get the Suburban.... Also known as a "Baptist Assault Vehicle."

It will at least intimidate the other drivers.

If you have never driven in the U.S.... and you are starting in LA? It is going to be an adventure.

Just a thought, but you could almost hire a limo for a few days... for not much more than the Suburban is going to cost as a rental. LA is full of limo companies and they aren't all stupid expensive. You can get 'weekly' or 'several days' rates. And never touch a steering wheel until you pick up a small car and head off into the hills for some much more fun/saner driving.

    Have blast in 'Merika, Barney!

Just remember that while America is a pleasant, friendly and temperate place. Everything in L.A. is trying to kill you. Then again, you're used to that!

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

Oh and if you are going up to Vegas... a little known and awesome place to visit is the Atomic Testing Museum. Hoover Dam and the casino's get all the publicity... and Hoover Dam is amazing. Pay for the 'deluxe tour' at Hoover Dam, btw. Worth the extra few dollars.

The hidden Gem of Vegas, however, is the Atomic Testing Museum.

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

I have driven in LA before but it was a few years back and only two of us in something like a Malibu. Have also driven a Suburban before but that was over 20 years ago and was an armoured urban assault vehicle, never considered using one for the family. Thanks for the tip Sirhr, will definitely check that museum out. I spent a lot of time at our equivalent, Woomera and Maralinga.

Today's Suburbans are nothing like those of 20 years ago. I have a 2016 - very comfortable and I like it a lot, but they're no longer trucks. Definitely go for the Suburban over the Pacifica. At least you won't be driving a minivan.

    Barn-

I am a fan of the car rental App Turo

It’s air B&B for your car. It was 1/3 to rent a Toyota Highlander 7 seater in Hawaii over a dodge mini van

    — surbirban with 3rd row of seats is right for the job

We rented a large Chrysler van for 5 adults and 1 baby to do a 5 day road trip.

The 6 of us fit- baby in a car seat is same size as an adult.
We packed light as laundry was available on day 3 and it was spring- so it was warm.

A suburban for 4 adults and 2 kids AND luggage?

    No way.

Once you have the 3rd row in, there goes most of your luggage space, especially 6 peoples luggage for a week+ trip.

I would rent a Ford Transit van. They seat 9 plus room for 9 peoples luggage. I would bet cheaper than a burban too.

Costco car rental deal is the preferred option at the moment but do I really have to pay an extra $12+ / day to use the GPS? When I try to book it comes up as an optional extra. I know I could use my phone but I would prefer a bigger screen and better sound. I could buy a unit for less than they want to charge.

Use your phone and have co-pilot watch it. The phone will be much more up to date. Most car GPS's are 2 years or more out of date.
Also since you are staying at the Stratosphere you should look at a map or google earth, get an idea of what is going on road wise. That place is a mess (as is most of 'Vegas). All the casinos are like that.

The google map app works well as it auto updates for traffic and other issues causing delays.
Here in Denver a 5 mile longer route can take 25 min less based on the advice of said app.
You have to allow some crap I hate having turned on on my phone. I just turn it on as I need it.

Momma uses it more than I (last time was over a year ago), so I will ask her for more details and let you know.

Maybe a little over the top Barney but an IPad with a Jet Pack (mobile secure wi-fi) would fit that bill. It’s what I use for work and I’m never on a public wi-if network with someone potentially having access to my data.

Highly recommend the Waze app for gps. There may be others good ones, but I drive for a living and use this one and am happy with it. It’s also free.

Checked with momma. Just the google map app. She has an android (Samsung) phone.
She likes the way it updates based on accidents in real time and suggests alternate routes.
She gets to do a sucky rush hour commute once a week and says it has saved her many times from missing her sons weekly appt.

    Other good advice as well.

Safe travels! And remember, you cant bring a liter of booze in your carry-on for “personal therapy”.

I usually pick up a bottle or two from "duty free" so I can have a drink the first night, seems this is still allowed?
    • Liquids (including alcohol) purchased after clearing the security checkpoint are permitted on the aircraft.

If you’re buying airside in Oz then not a problem, but booze is way cheaper in the states.

    Hi Barn,

I travel/work in LA a lot. Yeah, the traffic sucks most of the time, but you aren't going to be there for a lifetime. Just relax and go with it. With multiple people in your vehicle, you can use the commuter lanes, so that will help a great deal. Commuter lanes are not tolled, but there are a couple of sections of less common freeways that are toll freeways. Google maps will try to route you onto them. There are no tollbooths, you just drive onto them, they take a pic of the license plate and send the rental car company a bill, who in turn, mark it up and send it to you. Gets real expensive real fast. Study Google Maps on your laptop/tablet in the hotel at night so you have a better idea of your route the next day so you can stay off the toll freeways. There aren't that many of them though.

I'm also a big fan of Suburban XL and GMC Yukon Denali, both full sized. The above poster that remarked about the third seat makes a valid point though. Conversely, if I was driving from LA to Vegas, my preferred transport would be the Suburban/Yukon. Hell of a road vehicle. I rent from Hertz all the time, but you may be onto a better deal through Costco. Don't rent the GPS....it's now very old school. Consider renting/buying a burner phone over here so you can use Waze/Google maps.

Anything from the Duty Free shops is a scam. Ridiculously overpriced. Besides, you'll be smelling that cheap perfume that they sell everytime you take a pull off the booze bottle. Stop at a Ralph's (grocery), Von's (grocery), CVS (pharmacy) or Walgreens (pharmacy) to buy your booze. They are all big chains. It's about half the price of Duty Free. DO NOT buy anything from the little, mom/pop/corner liquor stores. Don't even pull in to their parking lot. About every other time I have done so, right afterward, my credit card gets a bunch of "unauthorized" charges on it and the CC company cancels it.

    Provided you go to one of the grocery stores for booze, pick up some of these refreshments;

Simply (brand) raspberry lemonade, Tito's (brand) Vodka. Mix, or don't mix. They're both great. The pharmacies don't carry the Simply lemonade.

Sir is right, go see the Atomic Energy Museum and Hoover dam. We went to the dam when they were building the bridge. The arches were about 2/3rds of the way done. It was just amazing.

Stay away of East LA, South Central LA, Compton, Watts and those general areas and you'll be fine. Like any other travel to/through a major metropolitan city, know what's going on around you, no flashy jewelry, etc. and you'll be just fine. If you get the chance, go up to the Griffith Observatory.........just don't do it on the weekend. Monday or Tuesday is probably better. Brents deli in Van Nuys on Parthenia St. is a jewish deli and the food is great. It's expensive, but the portions are humungous. Split a sandwich with someone and it gets appreciably cheaper. You won't be able to eat a whole sandwich.

(Headed out to catch the waterbus to Piazza San Marco, will try to post pics later )

Thanks mate, very helpfull, is Santa Ana in the East LA area you speak of? That is where I booked our Airbnb. Atomic Energy Museum is on the schedule, last time I was at the dam the bridge had just started. Turns out Costco will not recognise my Australian membership for the rental but I can shop there. Dollar rental are not much more so will probably go with them.

I hadnt thought of the duty free shops past security Barney.
Good point for my next rediculously long flight......

I heard that Barney was planning a brunch fundraiser with Maxine Walters in the hood in LA...... Vegan of course and mimosa’s for all. Complimentary blunts and a business card for a lawyer specializing in “getting disability” in the “goodie bag” when you leave.

Threadcutter, does the google map app have a way to turn off the routing to tollways? The one that came installed on my iphone does.

Good luck Barn, coming up in no time!

    Hi Barn,

No, Santa Ana is a bedroom community connected to Irvine, Anaheim and Garden Grove. It's between the I-5, I-55, I-22 and I-405 freeways. Pretty much butts up to Disneyland/mouse world. All, relatively good communities. Santa Ana may be a little bit tougher, but generally, you should be OK. If you have the address of the AirBnb, look it up on Google maps. Also, send it to me via PM and I'll take a look and offer opinion/advice.

On rental cars, make sure they don't ding you for a "drop charge", meaning, renting at LAX and dropping at LAS. I rent from various different airports in SoCal and drop at others with no surcharge.

    A couple of restaurants I frequent;

    https://www.originalfishcompany.com/
a bit of a drive, but worth it.

    http://www.ristorantegenovese.com/Hours---Location.html
less of a drive, but worth it for food and entertainement value. Family owned, multi generations, they work their asses off.

    https://www.carolinasitalianrestaurant.com/contact/
Largest craft beer selection in SoCal, but jeeze are they proud of it (prices).....

There are the swanky restaurants in Newport beach, you may want to look them over. I can recommend some places if you're interested.

Let me know what else I can do to help (y);):)

Powda, I haven't found it, but I haven't looked very hard. I know my way around LA well enough that I usually only use Google Maps for traffic alerts. I haven't used "Waze" yet, but I hear good things about it. Maybe they don't try to route you onto tollways. i think the single best thing to do is to have a navigator who can do searches and updates, leaving the driver to "drive"......

Navigating around LA isn't really the big deal that most people have heard, or make it out to be. Secret is to know where you are going ahead of time and leave extra time to get there...........
