I am in the middle of buying parts for a hunting rifle build. This will be a 300WSM and I am trying to figure out what twist rate I should get. I have two options, either 22 (cut a little weight and be easier to pack) or 24" (a little harder to pack, but gain a little more speed) barrel and I am trying to decide if I want to go with 180gr or 210gr bullets in either setup. What would you guys recommend for the twist rate for these options? With a shorter barrel am I going to be able to reach the full potential of the 210gr bullets?

Re: need twist rate help

What action? I wouldnt get a winchester short mag on a Remington action. Seen them not feed well. Heard from people who know much more than myself that they dont feed well in SA Rem700s.
Ask the smith to ensure it feeds right with your desired OAL. Load him some dummy rounds.

That aside, Id get it in 1-10. It will shoot the 168s to 190s.
The 190 SMKs are what I'd try. They seem to be accurate and forgiving. They just shoot.
If you can get near 300WM velocity, good for you.

Split the difference and get it 23"
