Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

It isn't a ball powder. But my favorite load for my AR is 21.7 grains of IMR 4198 under a 55 grain FMJ. It spins it out of my stock rifle at an average of 3060 fps and groups less than 1 1/2" at 100 yards with my iron sites. I shot a 30 round group and the first 3 went wide left. The other 27 went into the 1 1/4" group.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

May not help but, 52 grain Sierra Match with 25 grains of H335, Sierra says 2900 I get 3100. Sierra lists the same load at 2900 FPS for 55 FMJ also.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

TAC and X-Terminator meter well! I buy the el-cheapo 55g for plinking and 23.5g of X-terminator

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

I have used Sierra Matchking 69gr with 21.7 grains of tac and it worked pretty well.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

24-25 grains of TAC under a 55 for me. Meters dead on in my hornady powder measure. I got great results from 4198 as well, but it doesn't meter well for me, so it's more work than I want to put into ar ammo.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

AA2230, AA2460, AA2520, H322, H335 are the ones that come to mind. I switched powders so I don't have current load data but I was using 52 match and 25 grains of AA2460 I think. I am now using 2230 which is a faster burning powder, I have 16lbs of it as a gift so might as well use it.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

I also have some of the 2230 what are you using for a load? I really would like to find a 52 grain hornaday load.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

Benchmark from Hodgdon. Its not a ball powder but it meters pretty darn well. For me it shot the best with the lighter bullets (55gr). I can get 1MOA to 1.5 MOA from an M-4 clone with a chrome lined barrel and a 4x ACOG scope. Its not an accuracy rig to begin with and I'm shooting bulk hornady bullets to boot, so I've been more than happy with the accuracy this powder is producing.

2nd in line would be Ramshot Tac, meters awesome (most ball powders do).

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

My pet load for all my 223's is 26.2 grains of 748 with 52 grain SMK's. In my AR's a little over 1" 5 shoot 100 yard groups and in my PSS 0.5-0.7" groups

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

24.5 grains of Accurate 2460 at 2900 FPS - 2.260 COAL.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

Once fired LC mixed headstamp brass.
Cases trimmed to 1.6800 with the Possum Hollow trimmer
Montana Gold 55 grain FMJBT bullets seated to 2.2530
24.2 grains of A2330
CCI #41 primers

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

With a 55 gr. LC FMJBT & CCI 400 ~ AA2230 cycled my 16" AR with charges from 22 gr. up to 25 gr. Brass used was LC'06, FC (crimped & non-crimped), and Winchester. At 25 gr. only the Winchester displayed slight primer flattening.
24 gr. (+/- .1) of AA2230 seemed to perform best.
Currently I'm working on a load for the same bullet using AA2015 and possibly magnum primers (CCI 450).

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

any one try any h335, h322 or blc2?

Im getting 200 to 225 feet per second less velocity less then published data in my rr ar. It has 1in 12 24 inch barrel so dont think it should be that off.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

I like 27.8gr. Win748 w/ 52gr. Sierra Matchkings

55gr. Hornady V-MAX I like 26.5gr. of BL-C(2)

both are "BALL" powders.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

I'll echo the BL(C)-2/for a 55gr bullet, as a powder to use.

One caveat is that I've had issues with it reliablely functioning in an M-4. Not sure if a pig tail gas tube would resolve the problem, but in a 10.5" barrel, I haven't had luck with BL(C)-2. Out of a bolt rifle however, it is exceedingly accurate...

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

Mixed brass, both mil surp and commercial
Wolf SR mag primer
52 Blitzking, 55 FMJBT surplus, 50 Vmax
25.5gr H335 or 27.0gr of BLC-2
Seated to 0.010" under mag length.

I have a 20" upper, I get appx 3100-3150 from the H335 and appx 3250-3300 from the BLC-2 (depends which bullet).

With the 52 Blitzkinds and 50 Vmax they hammer out to 600 yd.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

I load 25gr of Varget under 55gr FMJ boattail bullets. Chronos at 3050fps. Wouldnt load Varget with the Dillon thrower because it bridges, but Varget works great with the Hornady thrower.

Re: Need your help with 223 ar loads.

I can't imagine a good reason to trim brass to 1.68" which is .070 under the spec. Depending on the chamber used that is going to quickly overwork and ruin the brass.

I don't shoot the lighter bullets but have been told 25.5 of 748 or H335 behind a SMK 52gr should shoot under an inch, if it doesn't you have a gun problem.
