I notice the image in my el-cheap-o spotting scope had turn CC about 15 degrees for whatever reason. I have not dropped it but I'm using it as a excuse to get a better one. It was 65 bucks from Cabelas when they were doing some special about 2-3 years ago. Any way budget is 300-400 mostly shoot 200-300 with the occasional 600 yard. I may before long (toward end of the year) get in to a 1,000 yard range.

Range finder would be nice to have to range my distances at my house or when on some farmers land instead of having to use GPS on my phone that is -/+ 10 yards.

I was out yesterday with a cheap spotter (leupold seqoia...was a gift)...not keeping it. For the money, you'll be hard pressed to beat Vortex. You will be better off waiting a year and increasing your budget but if you need one now, Vortex is the route I'd go.

As to the rangefinder, try to borrow one. Then take good notes/diagrams so you have known distances. For how often you'll use it, this is the way to go. I only bought one for long range hunting or would be following my own advice.

One more piece of unsolicited advice...don't wait to "stretch your legs." Find a buddy to go with you and get out to 600+ as soon and as often as possible. Take care, happy shooting.

It's addicting.. I know 600 is not "Far" but for me is it since most I ever shot was 200. I got hooked this past weekend, so much fun. I'm just to carbine style classes (fast and loud) and since I have a range at my house (out to 200yd). The nearest range is a hour and half that is over 300 but that range is not finish yet.

What would be the best bang for the buck in vortex? My scope now goes out to 60x but was dark out to there.

For spotting, the Vortex Viper HD is probably the best band for the buck. The non-HD is a bit cheaper.

Another thing to do, is to look at the Optics classifieds here in the Hide.

I got a nice price on a Vortex Razor spotter and a Leica 1600B rangefinder. Saved a BUNCH of money.

^^^ beat me to it...good advice. You should wait for something in the classifieds or talk to a hide sponsor for best price if you have to have it now.

OP, it's only downhill from here! :) Now you're hooked...
