Got a little forkie up in the Rubies, Just went up for two days, hiked in in the afternoon on Thursday and spent the night, got up the next morning and spotted a little forkie up on the ridge, decided I was going to go through the motions like I was going to take the shot, ranged him at 560 yards, my normal dope for that was 8 MOA, measured angle with ACI and it was .87, did the math, it came out to 6.96 MOA, dialed 7 MOA on the USO and then got comfortable behind scope and watched him for awhile until he stepped out from behind tree and I said the hell with it and put cross hairs behind his ears and let her rip. Point of aim point of impact, got him right where spine attaches to the base of the skull and "flipped his switch"! It was good because where he was at was near the top of the ridge and I didn't feel like chasing him all over hell's half acre, hind sight being what it is I wish I would have passed and waited for something bigger, but the wife wasn't happy with my being gone so long for Wyoming hunt then right back up there for mule deer season....oh well, now the wait begins for next fall!

Camp Site

Deer was just to the right of the rock formation on the right in the trees just below the peak of the ridge. 560 yards from camp site, 6.5 SAUM reached out and flipped off his light switch, severed the spine right at the base of the skull. When I cut off the head there was no twisting or sawing required, it was all knife work.

Getting ready to pack out

Ran into a badger on the trail on the way out, he thought it was his trail and he hissed and lunged at me, got him at point blank range with the 30/30 Marlin lever gun, with the Hornady Leverlution ammo. He is currently at the taxidermist getting made into a rug with the head mounted in the mouth open. Good hunt, already looking forward to next fall!
