Well, more like 940 yards, but close enough for me!

Lobo151 and some other local guys invited me to a get together this evening in our area in hopes of bringing me in to the club.

I must say that I need a need a little practice to be consistent, but I think I am getting my feet under me.

My first shots to the 508 yard target was pretty easy. Before this Id never made it past 350 so I was stoked.

Took me about 2-3 shots to get aligned at almost 1000, but when I hear that steel ring I could have danced like a school girl.

I ran out of adjustments about half way up, and its because Im not using a 20moa rail.

Just wanted to brag a little, I know I am no where close to being a professional or skilled marksman, but I know that someday I will be hanging with the big names of the game!

Re: New 1000 yard member!

Your post is a reminder of my own first experience shooting at 1000 yards. I hope the journey is as fascinating for you as it has been for me. I see you live in Hazard, I'm in Louisville, not too far away. So, if you're ever coming to the Louisville area, and want some help putting it all together, just holler. I typically shoot/train at the KCR facility.

Re: New 1000 yard member!

Good job, looking at a target out there 10 football fields away and wondering how in the world can anything hit a small target that far away?

Hearing that distant "ding" and knowing you made it happen just brings on the biggest grin. Ya can't wait to tell others and rightfully so.

Nice to also have witnesses to share the fun with.

I fondly remember my first bang... one, one thousand, two, one thousand, three, one thousand, four, one thous... Clang! Congratulations on yours. Now you’re likely addicted like the rest of us junkies.

Re: New 1000 yard member!

As for the rifle:
Remington 700 SPS Tactical / 20'' heavy barrel
Bushnell Elite Tactical 4200 3-12x44mm
Leupold rings and mount which are coming off this week and replaced with a 20moa rail, I didnt have enough adjustment to hit the 954yards and ended up having to hold over my mil's.

The ammo was factory
Hornady 150gr SST's at an estimated 2650fps from muzzle.

There you are Lobo! Thanks again buddy, I went to Mac's house and hung out for a few hours on Monday and we are definitely getting back together soon.

Re: New 1000 yard member!

That sounds good!

Did you get your feet wet, in reloading?
Remember, I have that reloading equiment, If you need.

just let me know, when you get your 175's in. and we will go back to my range, and light it up!!!

BTW..Did you find a 20MOA base?

Re: New 1000 yard member!

I have the same rifle...I've had the best luck with Hornady's SST Superformance in 165grain. Not quite as a flat as the 150's but it seems to group tighter for me. May give those a try if you haven't already, see what you think. Nice shooting!

Re: New 1000 yard member!

Congrats....I hope to join the 1k members by the end of summer. This past week, I hit my steel at 580 yards and I was very happy. I just need to buy a larger piece of steel for the 1k shot.

Sure did, and reloading was much easier than I thought it would be, the biggest part will be finding the exact load my rifle loves to make it happen with.

I spoke to Mac earlier this evening about the 175's and ended up not even having them in stock so I apparently dont have ammo on the way, but that wont keep me down!

For my fathers day gift I ordered a 20moa rail from SWFA, Midway was sold out of EGW, and a Impact Data Book with all the goodies I need including mil to moa and moa to mil conversions, so you guys will stop calling out minutes to me and me looking at you like idiots!

Lobo can chime in on the size of steel we was using at 954, but I imagine a 20x20 would be good enough. Ours was painted with a bright, almost neon orange paint so you can see it easily. And dont worry about your first shot, you will most likely be off, you will just need to dial in with the wind and you will probably see your misses as dirt will fly.

Re: New 1000 yard member!

Clean M,
Lobo, is out of town...... But, his target is 18x24 with the head!
Or 18x20 torso.

Good to see you got a 20MOA rail and data book, on the way. You will use you data
Book, more than you think!

If you start reloading, be careful! Its not to B taking lightly!!

Tell you one thing, at 954 yards it sure looked smaller than 18x20!

Yeah I have a feeling the data book will be a great investment especially when I start reloading and find that one load that works for me. Ill be able to just turn back and see what I was doing on a similar day and be abe to hopefully get same results or better.

I ordered the range estimators and conversions, along with the stencil so that I will be able to make accurate adjustments in the field.

Not quite sure when I will jump in the reloading game, I guess when the funding is available. I have a ton of brass saved up and plan on starting a kit by the end of summer.

Re: New 1000 yard member!

Good, the data book is your best things in your kit!
I'm sure you will learn to use it well.
It took me some time to convince Mac. Of that.
But now, he uses it to death!

From what I have seen, and found. The sps like about any thing you put
In them. From 155-175's !
But, for what you will B shooting, the 175's will b the best bet!
If it were me.... I would start with 43-44gr. Of Varget or R-15
Under a 175gr SMK. That's about the sweet spot for most of the
Shooters I know...and what I use (44gr)

Good luck!

I plan on going the 175 route once I get my funds together for the reloading kit. Mac has some BL-C2 he wants to sell for a pretty good price, but I will experiment with different things first before I make my final decision.

Re: New 1000 yard member!

Good to see you have the ball rolling, on getting your rig up and going!

yes, 175's are a good place to start. Also, handloading will
help your accuracy, and save you a load of cash!

Yep, you need to try diffrent powders, ect. But, I like the 175's with R-15 or Varget. BLC-2, not so much.... to slow!

Let me know how it goes!

Re: New 1000 yard member!

I finally figured the wind this am. Put 4 in a 6 inch circle at 1130 yds. no. 5 was 12'' away at 12 0'clock. Feel pretty good. took me awhile, but very satisfying.
