I was about to go squirrel hunting with my Savage 9317 BTVS, then realized that the gun is simply too heavy. At 7.5 lbs without scope (another 1-2 lbs) she just isn't all that suitable for trekking around the woods.

So I decide to remedy that. I went squirrel hunting with my trusty Marlin 60, but I strongly prefer the 17 for many reasons.

I went and picked up a new Savage 9317 with Camo stock, camo scope and camo rings. I'm sure that both the rings and scope are pretty much junk, but it is exactly what I was looking for.

When I get her sighted in, perhaps on Wednesday, I'll take her for a spin in squirrel country.

I'll post pics when I get them.

Re: New 17

It depends on how you squirrel hunt. With my 17hmr Annie & 3x9x40 scope I can sit on the deck...a cold beer in hand. Head shots are not a problem @ 100 yards. For carry out in the woods I use my semi auto browning 22 with iron sights.

At home I use a Gamo Hunter air rifle with a fixed 4x scope and shoot out to 30 yards or so. In the woods I have been using my Marlin 60 .22 with iron sights which has served well, but I like the 17 ballistically and want to have a carry rifle for in the woods. My thumbhole laminate stock and SS Bull Barrel 17 HMR is just too big to lug for squirrels, so I got a smaller, lighter 17 with the same action and trigger for the woods.

For ground hogs we have another story. Sit out in the field with a bipod and have a good time with that thumbhole Savage.
