So I’m selling off some guns that are just sitting around to finally rebarrel my savage 10 .308.

I wanting to go to a .260 Remington. I have my savage barrel/action in a xlr chassis.

What I can’t decide is do I just rebarrel and keep the action. Or...

Does someone out there make actions that are printed to the savage and I can get a whole new action/barrel that will fit my chassis.

I don’t know much about the “custom” barrel/action world.

Suggestions on how to proceed? I’m hoping to get around $1000-1200 after I sell some things off to use for this upgrade.

To the best of my knowledge, no one other than Savage makes an action with the same footprint. Most, if not all custom actions are 700 footprints.

If it were me, I would rebarrel the Savage. I had one and I had Criterion and Shilen prefits on it and both shot pretty damn well.

That’s what i thought from researching around.

Any preference between the criterion and shilen? They seem to be the most common for savage pre-fits. Also came across x-caliber pre-fits.

Thanks for the response

Check out NSS and Bugholes. Both have what you need for your Savage. Jim at NSS is a good guy, order by phone. I just picked up a couple of barrels and a Rem700 action.

The Sav 2 is the best trigger out there, most adjustable. I have had the Timney, Rifle Basix Sav 1, and all. Sav 2 is better.

You can have Fred at Sharpshooter true and time the action is you wanted.

Depending on your bolt, you could put in a bolt lift kit, makes bolt lift a little easier.

There are some good instructions and people at www.savageshooters.com.

Good luck.

Buy a model 12 LRP (large barrel shank repeater target action with a solid top (more rigid)), the LRP barreled action will drop right into your chassis and you can sell the HS stock and recoup a few hundred dollars.

McGowen makes a very nice pre-fit barrel and give first time buyers a discount.
Lothar-Walther also make a very good pre-fit barrel.

Thanks guys,

Any suggestions on barrel contour for PRS style shooting? For the Criterion/Shilen pre-fits they have Varmint/MTU/Bull for the small shank barrels.

Varmint seems a little smaller than the more common contour offerings for other manufacturers, and the MTU/Bull might be getting on the heavy side.

edit: criterion got back to me and said they will do more contours than they listed.

I like a heavy barrel. I'm using a Medium Palma now, but it is lighter than what I originally wanted. The barrel for my 6.5x47 is going to be an MTU and the barrel for my 6.5 Creed will be M24. I like the added weight as it helps reduce felt recoil.

Bull might be too heavy as I believe it's finished at 1.00" diameter at the muzzle. I like something in the .900" range.

yeah i was looking at the medium palma and heavy palma

i definitely want something a little on the heavier side, but I figured the bull would be a bit much. at the time of my post I didn't realize they would offer other contours, so I was having trouble deciding between the three the mentioned. but now that they'll do any normal contour i think I can decide a little easier

Then will send my action and new barrel to sharpshooter supply for truing/timing/install.

That’s one of those things where you send it off and then don’t hear a word for a year. Lots of complaints on accurate shooter.

Not pressed on getting the action worked on honestly. I just figured why not.

I don't have the proper barrel vice and tool to do the barrel swap myself at the moment so i'll try to find somewhere local to do it for me and pass on the T&T for now.

A northland action wrench is 60 and the nut wrench is 18.

Did you get a new nut and recoil lug wit the barrel? If not northland has those for 35 and 27.

They have headspace gauges for about the lowest prices of most places. Like 28 bucks for a go, you can scotch tape it for a no go. Maybe 15 bucks to ship all that. Totals to 183.

Add in a viper vice for 68 shipped brings ups to 250.

So thats more than I had in mind when I started adding it up but depending on how much you can find someone to do it for you it might not be a bad investment.

thanks for putting together that information.

I just heard from back McGowen, for $85 I can send in my action/barrel and they will swap it out for me.
