Good afternoon all, another new poster, this time from the UK.

Finally permitted to own rifles and working on moving from shooting deer at 100 yards to killing innocent steel at longer ranges.

So, I'm chopping my sauer 100 in for something heavier and longer (to be determined, funny how UK/US markets are different) and spending more time shooting lying down.

Anyway looking forward to perforating targets from too far away to see the point of impact. Anyone in the UK who fancies a shoot, gimme a shout. I'm at Orion four times per year.

Welcome from Texas! I enjoy watching one of your mates in Hereford that has a hunting program broadcasted here in the states.

My first 308 was a ruger something something in the lone star gun range in Lockhart. Followed up with Hard 8 bbq and a drive to Odessa. Damn good day.

Hereford develop some... specialist shooters... 😉

Howdeh! Still trying to get a feel for California. I grew up riding motocross and surfing so SoCal is like some kind of promised land. Do you have a clear 1000yds in long beach or do you get out to Glamis or something?

Also, sublime rocked.

i have to drive 1.5 hours to get to a range for 1000 yds.
i lived in the UK for a few years in the 90s (near Hereford)

At least you get to do it in a V8, right?

Some very scary, normal looking folks from out around there. Some sort of hub for specialist shooters...

Hey shooters, I have had some bourbon and feel bold enough to ask a stupid question.

I was told by my coach/instructor man that it's not OK to get oil on my sauer 100 bolt face after cleaning and oiling. I assume this is a generic bolt action rifle question - what is the consequence of getting oil on the bolt face please? Will it blow/burn out in a mag's worth of pre serious shooting warm up?

I'd look at it more along the lines of it not needing to be there, so keep the bolt face clean. It's an odd question, not one that I've heard before. After cleaning, I wipe down my bolt with Kroil or RemOil, then remove most of it with a paper towel. Just a very light coat, mostly for corrosion protection.

Welcome, from the Pacific Northwest ! (y) (y) (y)

Pac NW is... Oregon? I'm a surfer/shooter and not the other way around!

Thanks for the wisdoms xit seemed like a short lived and self solving issue but your response makes sense.

I also race tune motorcycles so I guess my threshold for wet might be different than the public?

I don't know so I thought I'd better ask!

Oil on the bolt face or in the chamber can cause pressure spikes during firing. Best to keep those parts clean and dry unless mothballing the gun for a long time, in which case a coating of oil will protect unfinished surfaces from rust/pitting.

Is clean and dry solvent bathed and ready to paint, or oiled then wiped clean(ish) with something which doesn't leave debris?

Oiled and wiped dry is fine. Basically you don’t want them dripping with oil...the cartridge brass expands when fired, liquids don’t compress and if there is water or oil present in the chamber or on the bolt face it gives the brass less room to expand.

Thanks, I hoped it was a question of degree, but didn't know where the threshold was. Much appreciated.
