We do, but travel distances here in AZ are usually longer than in NY.
I live in a small town, Pearce, in the very SE AZ high desert at 4350ft. Ben Avery Range (out to 1000yd) is outside Phoenix about 3000ft lower, and is an overnight trip. My 'local' club range is in Douglas (4200ft, 300yd/m)), 50 miles South of Pearce, essentially on the US/Mex Border, and we share the facility with CBP/ICE. They are excellent facilities, but the travel even to Douglas is an hour each way. I have a shooting buddy, however we are also currently dealing with the leftovers from Rita and the continuing SE Monsoonal rains.
The atmosphere here is somewhat thinner, and has a perpetual soft haze from the 2.5 micron dust particles. After a substantial rain, you can see clear all the way down into Mexico.
There's a lot of flat, open spaces between looming mountain chains, much of which is devoted to agriculture and cattle, and not available for LR Shooting. That was is real surprise, but I can still get out and shoot, so it's no big deal.
I shoot a lot of .223/5.56, moderate .260 and .308, and some .30-'06 Garand. I keep current with a Ruger American Pistol 9mm (17+1). I get to do maintenance for the VFW's eight Garand Parade/Saluting Rifles, have completely refinished the (white walnut army depot aftermarket) stocks, and reblued all of the smaller individual parts.
They look like new rifles.
News flash, Daughter and Grandson (19) are on schedule to be here about 6PM, driving straight through with brief stops for naps, which is good because they will need showers and right to bed for a full night's sleep.
Their new lives begin tomorrow morning.
He's EMT Trained including Pediatric and Mental Health (his Dad is the local Volunteer Fire Department Chief in Himrod, NY), as well as considerable experience working in vineyards, which we have in good number around here.
She's got more than 10 years experience as a VFW/American Legion Bartender, and is transferring from Wal-Mart in NY to nearby, with status as a Trainer.
So there are some prospects for them right away.
Greg
PS Everyone under our roof by 7PM Tuesday night
