Hi,

Though I am not new to firearms or to shooting, I am new to distance shooting. I have a few friends that compete and I thought I would be a fun thing to get into. So I did some research (long time reader, first time caller situation). I ended up with a Remington 700 in .308 (I already have an Ma1 and Ruger GSR in .308 so one less caliber to load). This is what looks to be a M40a1 replica-ish at least in style. Which appealed to the history buff in me. It has a varmint profile heavy barrel, correct scope mount, and a Redfield Scope (6-18x accu range)

I did have a question regarding the stock. It looks like a McMillan M40 stock, but has no identifying marks except the numbers 326390 on the inside. The pachmayr recoil pad, checkering, and Wichita swivels do make it look like a McMillan though. Any way of confirming this?

The PO did a pretty hack job on the trigger guard attaching a different floor plate, but the rest of the gun was in good shape and I had it checked for headspace and go-no go before purchasing. So looks like I just need a new trigger guard and I'll be good to go. If anyone has one laying around I would buy it off them.

Update: after swinging by my local gunsmith to pick up a correct trigger guard it looks like I have a Remington with a Winchester floorplate... Frankengun it is.

Update #2: the Remington trigger guard does not fit, also its not a Winchester... Well it was a Winchester 70 short action floorplate once, before it was cut down to fit and just jerry-rigged to work.

The issue is with the stock. As you can see in this photo:

it was not made for this setup. The PO cut up a Winchester model 70 floor plate and butchered it into place. My local gunsmith and I took a look at it and that's what we came to the conclusion of. Looks like it was an McMillan HTC stock that had a blind magazine and somewhere along the way it was cutout for adding a floorplate (crudely). My options as I see it:

1) Sell the stock as is and pick up a used HS precision take off stock. Run that while I learn and call it good. See if someone wants to buy it and fix it.

2) Inlet the stock out the rest of the way to accept the R700 floor plate and epoxy the gap. This is what the smith recommended. I fear this will kill the stock's value, but does it have value as it stands is a good question in itself.
