Hello people, I just was recommended this site by a member of another forum and I have to say, this forum looks awesome!

Ok so let me start off, my name is Coby Im from Utah and I'm almost 19 years old. Ever since I got my first gun(Henry lever action .22 with a cheap scope) Ive loved shooting, and something has always drawn me toward precision shooting.

In the last 6 months Ive had to give up all my main passions due to an accident so Ive been shooting my 10/22 a lot and Im really loving it. I'm looking to get a new gun now and it will be my first centerfire gun.

I'm on a budget of $2000. So far Ive been researching a lot and I think I'm going to go with one of the police Remington 700s chambered in .308. From what Ive seen, that will be about $600. Would that be my best choice? Any comments?

So then Id need a scope, I'm thinking something in the ~$700 range. Any recommendations?

Rings? Rail/Base?

Then Id need the main needed accessories like a bipod and anything else deemed necessary. Thoughts?

And lastly, unfortunately, my $2000 budget also needs to incorporate the ammunition. What would be a good brand of ammo to break the gun in with?

That's the basic first purchases Ill be making. Later on Ill be investing in a lot more equipment, but that is what I need just to get me started.

I'm positive Ill have more questions, but those are it for now.

Thanks,
Coby

Coby,

It sounds like your off to a good start. Complete your profile and do some more reading before you make your mind up. This topic has been covered a ton here on the hide. Check the search engine in my sig.

Good choice. Would consider Remy 700 SPS. EGW base, and rings. Would consider getting a decent Leupy. Saw Bruno has a bunch that are on sale for any where from $500- and up. That should be a good scope to start and you don't have to worry about upgrading it until you have sufficient fund.

A word of caution. This hobby is very expensive and addicting. I think doing crack cocaine is still cheaper in the long run. LOL.

Re: New guy wanting to get into precision shooting.

Okay, Ill do some searching.

Thanks.

Edit:

Thanks DesertHK. Ill look into everything you mentioned.

I was looking ad I saw the 700 5r. I could get that but Id have to sacrifice a bit on the scope, but later on down the road Id get a better scope.

Yeah, I figured this was going to be expensive and a continuous thing.

I just gave up an expensive hobby so this one should fit nicely into it's place

Re: New guy wanting to get into precision shooting.

Sounds like you're on the right track.

308 is a good caliber, and the 700 is a well respected rifle. You might also look at one of the new Savage centerfeed 10FP's. They are in the same ballpark pricing wise, and its pretty rare that a Savage won't shoot well. I've owned three 700P's, and one of them had a barrel that just wouldn't shoot. The other two shoot great.

I'd recommend considering using some of your budget to purchase and learn to use some reloading equipment, you will save money in the long run and be able to shoot excellent ammo. It's not for everybody, but anybody can learn to load good rounds.

Awesome, its good to hear Im on the right track.

And yeah, I will definitely be getting some reloading equipment and learning about that because it will save a lot of money and it looks rather fun as well.

Thanks.

Re: New guy wanting to get into precision shooting.

A 5R is going to cost more than your projected $600 for the rifle. May want to consider scanning the foresale section.

SPS is a decent gun to start with, but must admit that the stock sucks big time. So you need to factor that into the budget as well. If you bring your budget up to the 5R range, then you have a bit more options, and perhaps a more decent stock.

Yeah, I found a 5R at the local Impact Guns for $1040. That doesnt leave much for a scope, rings and base though.

Hmm.

Edit:

Id totally buy that above rifle, but I need to sell my bike first. Im planning on purchasing all of the stuff in early summer, I just like looking into it early. Who knows, maybe by that time Ill have more funds.
