I am looking to build a long range target gun. Mostly out to 6-700 yards with the occasional 1000 yard shot. I will be shooting paper or steel plates. The gun I have is a ruger m77 mark II in 300 wsm. My question is should I keep this gun or try and find a different gun or caliber. This gun will have no other use except maybe a coyote or some other pest. I have a Remington 700 30-06 and a browning a-bolt 7 mag that I am attached to so they will stick around and cover the hunting trips. I acquired the 300 wsm on trade so I have no attachment to it. One investment will be a brake if I am going to shoot this thing all day at the range. I appreciate any insight. I reload my own ammo if that helps any. Also I would prefer to buy something off the shelf and not put more into the gun than what the 300 is worth.

Hate to say it, but just my opinion , a Ruger Mark II isn't really a "good " option to do a build on. If it were a savage, model 70 Winchester , or a Remington 700, I'd say heck yeah. When it comes down to it, I'd sell the Ruger.. But a 700 or whatever and build off of it. You'll find it MUCH easier to obtain the "upgrades"

Hello Man, Welcome to the Hide. In regard to your question, I would build up a 6mm variant. Their are a few. 6mmCreedmoore, 6XC, 6mmSLR or the good old 6x47Lapua. I say 6mm because of the range you will be shooting at mostly and didn't mention hunting. I have even been able to find 105 Berger Hybrid bullets easier with the 6mm's. Do some searches on these four then come back with new found questions about your build. Thanks and hoped I helped some. Quite a few years ago I took a Ruger Mk II into a gunsmith to have accurized. He said it wasn't worth accurizing that model.

You could have that Model 700 trued up, and turned to a nice rig. Being a long action though isn't perfect. I shot a long action in the Army in my M24. They made them long actions to be able to convert into 300Win. mag. So, even a 308Win type case will feed from one, its just the added weight and it takes longer time and movement to work the bolt. Hope that may help some.
