My name is Will and I'm new to the forum. Didn't see an introductory thread so I'm posting in here... Been coming here and reading posts for a while and finally decided to join. Seems to be a lot of very knowledgeable and experienced folks on here. I'm fairly new to the more obscure nuances of long range shooting but have been around guns my whole. For the sake of learning though, I'm pretty much a newby to the lr tactical field. Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated! I currently Don't have a good long range shooter. Just a springfield xd40 tactical with a very high round count. My plan at this point is to purchase a Remington 700 sps tactical chambered in .308 and fit it with an swfa ss optic. (was thinking the 10x42 fixed but let me know if anyone suggests something different.)

Fear the man with one gun who's secure enough to admit that he isn't a Super Secret Squirrel Ninja Operator Special Forces Force Recon Chuck Norris-Beatin' Badass in his first post.

Re: New guy

do complete your profile

now is a great time to peruse the firearms for sale forum...some good stuff available now due to ......circumstances

find someone in your AO and get to know them and maybe test out some stuff before you buy......finding that person(s)will only happen when you complete your profile

Re: New guy

Profile updated! Austin Texas. Guns I have fired: Remington 700 pss (chambered in .308 and .300wm.), CZ550 varmint .308, Savage Model 110 7mm Mag (owned this rifle... unfortunately) To be honest with you, The rifle I liked the most was certainly the pss in .308 even though I def. enjoyed the winmag too. I'm a pretty thin build so shooting the .308 was more comfortable and I don't plan on any further than about 500 yards until i become very proficient at that range.

Re: New guy

If there is anyone here in Austin who would like to go out to the range with me sometime, I would much appreciate the perspective! I have a membership to Eagle Peak range or we could go out to the range of your choice. I would of course pay for ammo (of your choice naturally).

Thanks BOLTRIPPER! I've opened a thread in the bolt action rifle forum with a few questions if your interested.

Re: New guy

Wow a new guy that knows how to make a good introduction and not be a cocky ass. You will learn a ton on here if you read the posts. Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't take it personally when you get the "use the search function" replies.

Good job and welcome!

Re: New guy

My opinions are just that, opinions. My knowledge of firearms is mostly military type. Most of the ammo I shoot is miitary type. Therefore the pool knowledge I draw from is shallow in that aspect. With that being said.... Here is my opinion:
With the advances in gas gun technology I wouldn't buy another bolt gun in 7.62x51mm or 5.56mm. I have shot many bolt and gas guns side by side for many years and I prefer gas for the following reasons:
1. Certain gas guns are now as accurate as most bolt guns.
2. Faster follow up shots.
3. Easier to shoot from alternate positions.
4. No breaking of position between shots.
5. Ease of carrying and handling.
6. Lighter.
There are plenty more reasons, these are a few. Once again these are my opinions. If you wan't ideas on a gas gun to buy start a tread in the semi auto forum. You will get all the opinions and controversy you can handle.
As for scopes it is the same thing, I prefer the horus reticle, mainly because I like to use hold overs instead of dialing. I also believe milling your target is a viable means of ranging. This is very practical for military ops and hunting. If you are just target shooting then a straight mil dot may be sufficient. You may prefer dialing instead of holding.
As a rifle and optic is merely a tool in your hands, we would need a little more information as to what job you want it to perform.

Welcome aboard, now get back to work!

J/k, well I like your plan for a long gun. However, having said that you have just entered into a very expensive forum. I want to see if you stick with your plan or end up going bigger... time will tell.

Opinions are always welcome in my book. I like to have many different perspectives when weighing options. I have looked into the gas repeater arena and have shot a friend of mines custom FAL (which I thoroughly enjoyed) but I'm on a pretty tight budget in this stage of my life and those rifles usually bring a higher price tag that I simply cannot afford. I would be using this rifle for target shooting and hunting feral hogs (which would be perfect for a gas rifle).

lol! Well I have had some pretty expensive hobbies in the past and I know that plans are only as good as the first pencil but I have spent A LOT of time thinking this one over and have decided (knowing myself) to keep it on the lower side of finances or I will most likely never get it done. Hence the swfa ss optics instead of a nightforce or uso.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Looking forward to learning more about the long range arena and becoming a proficient shooter. I'm pretty laid back so it's pretty hard to offend me.

Re: New guy

For the price you can't go wrong with a Remington, they are tried and proven.
I've never used a swfa ss optic, so I can't say yay or nay to it. I have used horus vision optics and I think that they are a good buy for the price. As for magnification, get as much as you can afford as you can always dial it down.
Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I have looked into the horus optics some and definitely like the reticles as I am interested in using holdover instead of dialing but from everything i have read on the swfa ss optics, they are an excellent buy for the money and at this point, I need to keep this build as close to $1000 as possible

Welcome...and +1 on the Remington. Never happened to me but thare is a lot of controversy about AD's when closing the bolt. Just to be safe you might want to consider a new trigger like remingtons XMark of a Jewel

Lots of shooters around Austin, and its not far from Kingsville and the Hide Cup. And there used to be this guy named Shaggy

Thanks for the heads up! Certainly don't want to have a round discharge without my command... I'll have to look into a trigger.
