This is the first time I have used virgin brass, what do i Need to do to prep cases. The necks seem very tight, and have some nicks in them which I think is normal. Do I need to size, uniform pockets, deburr flash hole, and deburr neck just like using previously fired cases like I am used to? Thanks for the help. this if for 308 by the way.

Re: new lapua brass question

Carry on as normal. I know that Lapua brass is one of the few that is drilling flash holes instead of punching them. But it doesn't hurt to double check.

Good luck.

Re: new lapua brass question

lube them a little, run them thru your FL sizer, or neck sizer, to get the neck tension the way it should be.

Then just prime them up, charge them and seat.

It is possible to seat projectiles in them virgin, however the tension in the necks may be higher than what your dies are set up for... may as well size them with the expander ball.

Yep, i always run them through the sizer just to be sure.

It may not absolutely be necessary with the good stuff, but on the win or fed I am always glad I did.

Re: new lapua brass question

Not only that, but, when I get a box of brass, nine times out of ten the banging it has sustained in the careful shipping process ensures that at least 5-10% of the necks are out of round. A trip through the neck sizer gets these back to shape.

Re: new lapua brass question

I was pressed for time when i was home last so I primed and loaded my last batch right out of the box. I wasn't going to a benchrest competition, but I had no problem consistently shooting .5 moa at the shooting school I went to. I am sure I would have gained something by sizing them, I just don't know how much. I don't think I would try it with another brand but I had pretty good luck with Lapua.
