Hey guys, new here though trolled for a while. I'm mainly looking at starting a build on a savage action for medium range paper punching and since I'm on a budget its going to be probably over the next year. I already used the search option didn't find what I wanted so here goes.

    1. If you are on a budget, say $300-500 tops, besides the 10FP any other models worth starting out with? Stevens, 111?

    2. Does the entire savage line have the floating bolt head or just certain ones? I tried searching the net but mostly ended up reading general information regarding it not if it just pertains to certain models.

    3. If I go with a something else beside the 10FP is there a good selection for aftermarket stocks? Most sites just mention the 10 or model 12.

I want to chamber it in either a .243 or .260 no preference which. I am toying with the idea of handloading later but just want to get started in the meantime.

The 2 savages i like best for what i do are the precision carbine and the predater H1. They both have the accu stock and trigger. The carbine has 2 calibers 223 and 308. I have the 223 and it shoots great. My only plans are 2 put a SSS trigger in it. The other comes in some other calibers and has a fluted barrel. I picked mine up used for 550.00 with about 100 rounds through it. They go for around 700.00 to 750.00 new. Great stick for out of the box. Serves my purposes great for walking around varmint hunting. The carbine has a 20 inch barrel and the other a 22 inch 1. Both i think are around 7 pounds naked.....DAN

FlyingBullseye, If your not stuck on using a Savage rifle check out a Remington 700 VLS available in .243 or .260(harder to find) but should be right around $500-$600 used. Very nice actions and lots of customization available.

Not stuck on just savage but they do tend to be less expensive. There is a gun and knife show coming next weekend here in the Detroit area which I will be going to. I'm looking for what ever is the best deal, mostly seems to be savage. From what I've gathered reading the posts here there is a trade off one way or the other. I do plan on spreading the upgrades over the next year to spread out the costs.

I wouldn't buy a Savage on the basis that it is less expensive. Savage has raised their prices quite a bit, and they are not less expensive these days.

For medium range paper punching, you don't need a custom build, and for a non-reloader, it is going to be harder to find match ammo in those calibers. At medium range those rounds don't offer much of a ballistic benefit over the more standard 308, and if you reload, the 308 can be made to perform even better.

Consider a Rem 700 in 308, an LTR, Tactical or the new AAC model. Any of those should be accurate out of the box, or with some very minor work. You would have a working rifle right now and get in some range time. Any of those would serve you well right up front, and be a better platform on which to base a custom rifle later on.

FlyingBullseye, I'm in the same boat trying to get my feet wet in long range shooting with a moderate to low investment. I have found savages and remington to be on the higher end, and stevens and howa to be at a more resonable entry level price. From what i've read on here both howa and stevens are a good start and when funds permitt they are great to build up on.

I have a stevens 200. In it's stock form with the cheap bushnell 3-9x40 I had no trouble hitting at 500 yards with Privi ammo. Here is what I would recommend as a order of purchase.

Stevens 200 in your choice of calibers: 250-350.00
    Lee Classic reloading kit: 100.00
    Calipers: 12.00
    Lee neck coalating dies: 30.00
    Poweder trickler: 14.00
    Tumbler: 60-80.00

Reloading will do the most for you and makes ammo much cheaper in the long run. Next you need to move to optic and stock.

Any of the Super snipers (10x is best for everything) 300.00
EGW 20MOA base (depending on if needed for cal) 40.00
TPS or Burris rings 50 or 80
    Your choice of stock I run a B&C 220.00

This is my setup below currently.

Next will be a new barrel in either 308 or 260 remington. If budget allows me to I'm going to go to 260 rem if not then just a walter barrel in 308. I'm still pondering the cal. switch.

If you need any more info or have any questions PM me.

    Good luck,
