Hello all, been lurking here for a few years, decided to become a member recently. I did my research and decided on a m700 5r milspec. Living in a rain forest in Alaska, the stainless sounded like a good idea, and the factory heavy barrel was a good thing until I can do a action job and custom barrel. My rifle showed up today, and I bolted on a 3-9 nikon I had laying around until my new scope shows up. Got it on paper at 50, centered it at 100, and started shooting groups at 200 with proper break-in procedures. WOW! This is the first accurate rifle I've ever owned. 5 shot groups with federal 150gr averaged 1.2" at 200. The twist on this barrel is supposed to be for the 168-175gr loads. Looking forward to trying the 175 federal gmm smk's. I think I got a winner! Thanks for all the insight, and future help that I know you'll provide. I'm just too excited to contain myself. Thanks

you made a great choice.

don't worry about an action job and rebarrel till you shoot that barrel out. no need for it. just shoot the piss out of it and keep smiling.

I just bought my first accurate rifle as well and its like yours, rem. 700 5r. Mine loves 175gr. Right now I'm shooting handloads, SMK 175gr in Lapua brass with 43.5gr of varget powder.

Can't wait to work a load by using some of the guides in the reloading forum.

Have fun!

I love my 5R Mil Spec. I have been working on some hand loads with 175 SMK and Varget in Norma cases and BR2 primers. At 200 an inch group is about average, some times 3/4". I picked up some Nosler cases and am trying to get out this weekend and see how they do. Also trying some 178 A-Max bullets too.

Myself, I have really only cleaned it once and have about 250 rds through it. It wasn't even that dirty anyway. Just shoot it and enjoy!

Yes, this is a 308 caliber. I dicked around with an encore for awhile and learned how to handload, trying to squeeze as much accuracy as possible out of it. Frustrating at best, of course. I have been shooting an Anschutz rimfire and a pretty accurate 10/22 so I have had tons of marksmanship practice. Nice to bolt on a scope and make holes where I want them at will. I am glad I did so much reading here before I decided on my purchase. I did good on this one. Plans include a Leupy mk4 6.5-20x50, a trip to kampfeld for bolt fluting, and shooting the crap out of this thing. Living in remote Alaska, powder and primers are a big issue. Since I'm on an island, powder, primers and ammo are haz-mat. 300lb minimum orders if we want to ship stuff in. I did get 4lbs of varget, and 2lbs of re-17 from the local shop so I'll have to work from that for awhile. No benchrest or match primers available right now.... Thanks for the warm welcome. mnshortdraw Kodiak, AK

Man, and here I am thinking I have it bad. The weekly barge from Seattle to Haines (AML) doesn't have a minimum weight, just a minimum price. Anything up to like 200lbs is $65, give or take a few bucks. I've ordered a couple of cases of assorted ammo since I've been here. It's not too bad if you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks to get your stuff...
