Gunsmithing new project rifle

i am beginning research to start a new hunting rifle for next season, either in 257 wby mag or 264 win mag, and am leaning toward using a rem 700 mag action, shilen or similar barrel and mcmillan stock or similar. I want a stainless action and barrel. i dont know where to best source these parts but will gladly buy used. any recomendations?

Just a tip...Kinda tough to stuff a 257 or 264 into a short action.

Read a lot to figure out what would work best for you. Search the Commercial Sales section of the PX HERE and also the other sections to gather the necessary components.

Re: new project rifle

The McMillan Edge stock is reasonably priced and not too heavy to carry hunting, the Manners T1 (I think) is comparable as well.

If you want to do the work yourself the Savage can be easiest to work on and if you use a Savage you can use the Bell & Carlson Duramaxx stock which is inexpensive and a hunting style. That being said Remington 700 parts are easier to find used.

Re: new project rifle

jwprecision keeps mcmillans on hand, get an adjustable htg for hunting.

lilja is only an 11 week wait time.

dont overlook a surgeon round action. If you're not building this yourself, most smiths charge considerably for truing a remmy, then if you add a badger rail, well, your close to cost of a surgeon round action.

Re: new project rifle

Unless your going to reload i wouldnt get .257 weatherby mag, The ammo is expensive as hell. $65.99 a box.
If you dont got money, I would recommend B&C stocks if your not looking for $500 Manners or Mcmillians.
