New PURCHASE With barrel loose ? INCORRECT

I recently purchased a Savage MSR10 LONG. I had read on another forum a.r.1.5. That several others had purchased MSR 10 RIFLES with the barrel not securely attached to the upper with the barrel nut. SO just to make sure things were OK with my rifle , I tried to move the barrel at the end of the rail guard.... AND something was loose... The bolts holding on the rails were tight. SO I took off the rails, and sure enough, the barrel is not secure to the upper...

Is it common for a new gun (AR TYPE) to not have the barrel secure?

AND for those who will write that my first big problem was buying a Savage MSR in the first place... Thank you for your contribution!!

INCORRECT. MY BAD... THE barrel IS secure to the UPPER... The upper has lteral play, in the lower, so if the gun is put together without the front rails, and you pull laterlly on the tip of the barrel , back and forth, you can get lateral motion. Btu the motion is the barrel AND THE upper... so now how to secure the upper , laterally, to the lower.

After having read about the issues others had, you didn't think to check your particular rifle before leaving the store?

The only things you should expect to need to to do to ANY firearm before firing is to swab the barrel with a dry patch and- maybe- apply some lubrication. No, it is not common for any firearm to leave the factory in a state not ready to shoot.

One or two receiver shims (https://www.brownells.com/rifle-par...shers/ar-15-m16-receiver-shims-prod42002.aspx) fit between the front lugs of the upper and lower do a lot to take out the side-to-side play.
If your receiver fit is worse than can be fixed with the shims alone, you'll have to go with oversized pins. JP has them for the AR15 but not sure if they have them for AR10s.

Off topic - but I had a extra 338, a 110BA.. zeroed shot actually very well, uh, until the barrel nut spun loose...

Then there was that extractor that never worked and a chassis that loosened..

Man such scary QC.. the only savage I own and will be my last is a MRII 22LR

Look up Savage Arms MSR: tension set screw on you tube. You don't need those crappy accuwedges. I just got an MSR10LR yesterday and it is tight as a drum. Best trigger I've seen on an AR and I've got some nice ones. Only fault I've seen is the bolt release is really hard to press in.
