Gunsmithing New rifle Bolt not closing

Re: New rifle Bolt not closing

Did you have the bolt metal-finished recently? Is there any junk or debris (dirt, carbon, blasting media, etc.) stuck behind the extractor? This would cause the extractor to not snap over the rim of the case and cause a bind.

Re: New rifle Bolt not closing

Is this reloaded ammo? If so do any factory rounds chamber? Be sure & rule out the simple things 1st. Any gunsmith should of checked the chamber when the rifle was completed.

since you said a "new" stiller action, i am assuming this rifle has never functioned properly for you.

a couple questions come to mind and none of them have to do with the manufacture of the action. are you trying to use brass that was fired in another rifle? are you using new brass or factory ammo?

if you are trying to use brass from another rifle, make sure you are bumping the shoulder back enough, or better yet, get some new brass. if you are using new brass or factory ammo, you need to have the headspace checked. i would suspect the bolt would not close on a "go" gauge and you need to have a chat with the person who fitted the barrel.

Got a pic of this?

What are the rounds your trying to chamber?

Re: New rifle Bolt not closing

Is this ammo new factory loads or has the brass been fired in another gun?

If it is factory new ammo and it doesn't close on that then it's probably a gun problem. If it doesn't close and it's once fired brass go and find some factory made ammo and try it, if it closes on the factory stuff and not the reloaded ammo then you have a brass problem.

If you've deturmand it's a reloading problem you might need to use a small base sizeing die to size the base of the brass.

Re: New rifle Bolt not closing

You may be on the right track with the ejector pin if that is what you mean instead of the extractor pin. I have seen some that were too long and i had to take some off of top. If you have the tools and feel comfortable doing it, drive the roll pin out and put the ejector in the bolt without the spring. Make sure that it seats below the bolt-face. When your smith chambered it, he probably had the pin removed thus it head-spaced correctly.

Re: New rifle Bolt not closing

If the ejector pin sticks above the face when pushed in, it can be an issue. They usually go below at least .010. If it sticks out, I can replace it if you send the bolt or send you a new one. We usually check that before it is sent out, but we dont put a barrel on it. It is pushed in and visually checked. It could be missed.

Re: New rifle Bolt not closing

Jerry,

Thank yo very much. The bolt is coming back to you via Ozzie at Suarez Tactical. You should have it this week. I know you have a great company and make great products and always stand behind them.

I tell my clients that aside from quality work when there is a problem and no matter how good we are there are problems,we RESPOND. That is the difference between an OK company and a great company.

Re: New rifle Bolt not closing

To all concerned I want EVERYONE to know that this rifle was NOT built by Ozzie at Suarez. It was a rifle I purchased here on The Hide that I just sent to Ozzie to get fixed. Because I new he would do the best job possible. I live in California and for me to send my stuff 3000 miles away says something about the smith I'm using.

To further clarify things Ozzie at Suarez Tactical called me and said he had contacted Stiller and at no charge from either one of them to me was going to warranty the bolt. In case you can't read between the line I was willing to pay Ozzie to fix it and he could have charged me for it but contacted me and said it was taken care of AT NO CHARGE for a rifle he never even built or touched!

To even make things more clear I have owned numerous Stiller actions and have had my hands on various Suarez builds. THEY ARE BOTH EXTREMELY QUALITY COMPANIES. Not only is Ozzie my smith but I recommend him to all and to those who I have recommended him to they are TOTALLY blown away by his QUALITY and SERVICE and HONESTY.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

that is interesting. i have not heard of that being an issue. i guess i'll put that in my head for things to check if i ever run into that issue.
