Hey guys, I'm new to the site and have been searching the site for a couple of days now. I have a question: I'm wanting to start a Rem 700 .308 build; What components would you guys recommend? Should I start with the rem 700 action from brownells for 400 bucks? What about the trigger? floor plate? barrel? I would like to use a 24 inch schneider barrel 1 in 12 twist but can't find a supplier for those. I was thinking maybe a shillen instead. How about a list of parts that are proven for accuracy. I have a budget of about $1500 for the rifle and hoping for $2000 total with scope. Thanks Rick

Re: New rifle build

Welcome,Rick
it seems that you are on the right track.
you might want to consider a proven package that someone is selling.there some good deals in here that are proven shooters for the $1500-$2000 budget that you mentioned.

Re: New rifle build

I know that I could buy but I've been wanting to build for a long time now. I already build 1911's and AR's and have the tooling for truing the 700 actions that I bought from brownells about a year ago. I have tooling and equipment but haven't got into the 700's yet. I like to learn new stuff and I'm willing to spend the time.

I also looked in the for sale section and didn't see anything that would fit my budget.

I would love to buy a surgeon action but for my first build I don't have it in the budget.

Re: New rifle build

Welcom Rick,

I just got done with my build. I think that a remmys 700 action trued is a good starting point. I put a Kreiger barrel, jewell trigger, McMillian A5 stock and a vance break. With my smiths bill I have somewhere around 2k - the price of the origional rifle.

I have mine in the bolt action section, remmy 308 project.
It was a fun build, I learned alot and I am looking forward to my next one.

Re: New rifle build

Very, Very nice rifle build. Good info too. Thanks alot. I am thinking very hard about trying to stretch the budget and get a better receiver like a surgeon or a templar from gap. I will be doing all of the machining myself so no smith's bill. I have been a machinist for 17 years. And been doing my own gunsmithing for about 3 years now. Going today to hit some of the local pawn shops today to see if I can find some old beat up piece of crap that I can practice truing on.

Does anyone know where to get the schneider barrels? Or is there a better option? opinions please.

Is there a parts list/ breakdown of parts needed for a build on here somewhere. I would like to order everything and have it here before I start.
