Hey all,

I'm a newbie to Sniper's Hide and serious long range shooting. I just got a Savage 10 FCP with 24" barrel in a choate tactical stock.

For the most part, I like the stock. Thick grip, pretty stiff, aluminum bedding block, adjustable cheek, butt hook, etc. It's just a little too thick in the forend for my taste.

I'm going to take my barrelled action to a local gunsmith to have it cut down to 20" and new recessed crown. I've been really happy with how smooth the action is surpisingly.

I want to slim the forend down a bit with a sander, and then reinforce it all around with some additional fiberglass. Then I'll add some texture to the forend and the grip before adding a coat or three of duracoat.

I've never bedded a rifle, but I'll do more research to see if it's within my area of expertise...or get some help with it.

Is there anything else that I should do to the rifle before taking her to the range? Aside from adding optics of course.

Thanks all! I'm looking forward to learning from everybody here.

Yeah, at least shoot it as is and get a feel for it. Making the changes before having that experience may leave you disappointed.

That said, if you're going to cut it down and re-crown, consider threading the barrel at the same time. If nothing else, get a thread protector and leave it for the future. Alternatively, consider a flash suppressor or a brake. Either way, you are suppressor ready when the time comes for that.

Hmmm...shoot the gun as is...like right now? Aw shucks you guys...twist my arm. ok! I just needed a reason...and my Vortex to come in.

2manygunz - stop stop stop!! You're making the idea of spending money more and more appealing! I was planning on getting a Noveske Brake for my AR and testing it out. I know those are designed for sound but also help with recoil and follow up shots. I have a trust written to ease the Class III process.

Getting her threaded was definitely something I was interested in.

All kidding aside, I really want to do this right. Track every shot. Break the barrel in the right way. Find the right load. etc... So I'll be doing some searches and read everything on this site that I can to help. I'll take any and all suggestions.
