Hi guys.. I received my new scope. It seems that someone has played with the knobs before.. How do I center the reticle? How do I zero it at 100yds keeping the maximum elevation available for long range shots?
The scope is a sb 5-25x56 and 20moa base.
Thanks alot

Re: new scope, how to mount

to center the reticle, crank the turret all the way down. Im not sure if the 5-25 SB has zero stops but if not crank the turret all the way down and then count the clicks until it maxs out the elevation. You shouldnt have any problems zeroing it at 100 yds with the 20 MOA base, if its the mil/mil with the DT knobs then you will be fine. It only takes roughly 10-12 mils to get to 1K with a 308.

Re: new scope, how to mount

I just don't understand this: if someone already zeroed the scope in another rifle, then the knobs caps would be set for the zero of that rifle... now I want to put that scope in my rifle... but I don't know how to set the windage and elevation centered in the scope so I can start mounting the scope as if it was new..
Is it ok if I dial the elevation knob all the way down then go up for about ??? (how many) MILS and start working from there to zero at 100 yards?
If the knobs caps have been moved how do I know if the reticle is in the bottom of its travel range or at the top of it? I want to set the reticle as low as possible to allow as much travel for my 20moa base.. to shoot as far as possible with my rifle setup.
Thanks for your help guys

Re: new scope, how to mount

Doesnt matter if someone else had it or their rifle before or someone moved around the elev/wind knobs. Scope will be set up to your rig once its mounted & adjusted to "your" rig.

Just Set up the base, torque to manuf. suggested INCH/lb., Mount up the rings - Torque to INCH/lb. to base, Mount/Level the Scope, Bore Sight it @ "xxx" yard range, Adjust "Zero" the elev./wind to set range. Shot, readjust accordingly from POI to POA. Set Elev/Wind caps/knobs to final adjusted setting. Record placement.

You cant "select" how low you "want" the reticle to sit in its elevation adj. range. That is based on your setup. Once your "zeroed" at "xxx" yrd. range check how much travel you have then. You may have the elev. you need or you may need a greater MOA base. Depends on app.

Hope this helps, Good luck.

Have a great one,

One more: is there a way to estimate how much elevation travel is left to be used for long shoots without dialing all the way up the elevation knob to count clicks?</div></div> Once your dialed in, count how much adj. you have left. If you know your ballistic setup/info./AO info. you can determine how much elev. it will take to hit "x" distance. You may be limited by the ballistics of your setup more so than the scopes elevation range. But, I dont know only you will. Good luck.

Again, I dont know your setup from rifle, optics, base, AMMO, MV, AO info. .... Only you can determine this/that. Only we here, SH, can assist.

Hope this info. helps. IMHO: Mount up & Shoot

Well... in fact, it's worse than what you think: I had to pay lots of things to get this one... a S&B cost for me about $4800. And I earn about $550 per month. Do the maths and tell me how much time have I been saving to be able to buy this.

A scope is a scope, no matter how much money you want to spend on it.

The only tactical scopes I can buy in my country:
Monarch X, Shilba (china crap), Horus Vision Raptor and a bushnell with rangefinder on it (about $6000).

I decided the S&B was a good thing to put my money into. I think I will enjoy it. I don't want to be fighting against a $80 chinese scope. I don't want to buy a Monarch X for $2300. And I don't want to pay $2300 for a Raptor when I don't even know if I can get a warranty if it fails... and even if I can get the warranty this will cost probably another $1000 or so. I prefer to buy something I know it's the best proven scope and I know I will enjoy and trust probably for many many years, if not for life.

And I know how to zero a scope, just happens that here people use hunting scopes and they don't mind how much elevation is used to get to 300 yards. People here often zero at 50 or 100 yards and do hunting up to 300 yards. Because of this, I'm used to zero a scope to that distances put the caps on the knobs and forget about those knobs until replacing the scope. And we do this without considering how much elevation or windage we have left because there's no need for that.

Now that I'm getting into long range shooting, I need to know how to zero a scope keeping all the other variables in mind.

I'm sorry if this bothers you. You will often find people who has better stuff than yours... I don't comment on my shooting mates' expensive rifles... I enjoy shooting with them as we enjoy shooting my old mauser carbine without optics on it.

I hope you can buy your SB someday. Meanwhile, if you ever get to travel here, you're welcome to shoot with mine

I've never asked about a 6.5mm in an AICS... weird. I asked about a rifle I'm building: 700SA, .308Win, aics, and so on, but nothing about a 6.5mm... Why do you ask?

I just reviewed my posts... I posted a question on someone elses thread who installed a 6.6mm fat barrel. Since I already ordered a barrel with a heavy contour, I was trying to find out if the action would hold up. But my barrel will be .308, not 6.5mm

Re: new scope, how to mount

gknittel, I had skimmed back thru your post only to determine what caliber you might be setting up, and what bullet drop you might need to dial at longer distances.
