I just pulled the trigger with russell at SSC on a new build. I have talked to several gunsmiths over the past few weeks. I looked into several different options, and nobody was even close to as helpful as Russ was. He didn't act like he was bothered by having to answer a few questions about different routes I could go with this build. The Idea was an all around utility 308. It will be in a Mcree chassis with a nightforce F1, as for the barreled action I chose to go with the Stiller tac 30 with the A/W mag cut. I am still a little up in the air on the barrel, and would be willing to listen to any input you guys have. I am going with a 20" and either a M24 or heavy palma or rem varmint contour. This is going to be a hunting rifle as well as a target rifle so I want to keep the weight reasonable. There is also a tightbore barrel that is available in m24 contour. I have never used a tight bore barrel and would like to hear and opinions you have on it.

Re: New Scout Supply Co build in the Pipe

Once I get my stock in I think I'm also going with SSC. Communications, which is important to me, has been great so far with Russell. The bonus is that La Grange, TX is just a 1.5 hr drive from Houston. I'll save BIG TIME on shipping and I get to see the smith in person to build a better working relationship. On top of that, his prices are very reasonable.

I can't help you on the tight bore deal. As far as what contour, that's going to be very subjective. I would personally go M24 and sort of split the difference. If you're going to be humping it around a lot, then I suppose you can go lighter with the Rem Varmint. You'll be saving at least a pound.

I have nothing but awesome things to say about Russell. I just shot a little less than 1/4 MOA the other day with my SSC rifle. Doesn't get much better than that IMO. Communication was awesome, as you have already noticed.

If you are willing to take a chance, I took a leap of faith on a Muller Works barrel with the advice of Greg Young from Bugholes. He has most of the big name barrels in stock, FYI. Good luck with the build.
