I recently started a rifle build starting with a 700 tactical aac. I wanted something cheaper to plink with than my .50 at the range and also plan to use it for long range hunting in deer season. I mounted a Millett 1 piece rail and got a Millett LRS-1 for optics, but after seeing this monster mocked up on it I may go another way. It looks a bit overkill with that big of a scope on a 20 inch barrel. Either way I am on to the chassis and trigger. I am 75% sure I am going with a Jewell trigger but would consider others. And my chassis is down to three...the XLR, AICS 1.5, and the HS M24. Here is where I need help. I want to be able to take this rifle hunting too. I usually hunt from a raised position with 400 yards to my left right and front and have a shot over a hollow into another field at about 650 yards. Last year I sat my 50 on the bench doped at 700 and had my 270wsm ready for the short shot. This gun could take care of both situations for me. How does the XLR and AICS feel when firing in a standing position? I have never handled either. Also will any of theses 3 need modification to use a Jewell trigger? I love the ergos of an AR which is why I really like the idea of the XLR. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd pick up a HS takeoff or B&C for $200 and spend the rest on a better scope. You will get much more use out of good glass that is going to track and be reliable than you will out of a feature packed stock.

Have to agree there, better glass first, though JMO. As for trigger I've gotten to where i like two stage triggers on my rifles, and Huber makes a good one. Stocks i've used so far have been my McMillan A5 and my HS varminter. I like both but love the A5.

I have no issues with buying nicer optics and a nice chassis. I picked the millett up for something like 380 bucks when sportsmans guide had a double your club discount 1 day sale and figured I would give it a shot. If I do decide to go another direction my 204 needs better optics than the old school tasco world class that is on it now anyway so the millett will find a home on one of my rifles.

Well you really can't go wrong with any of them. I'm not a big fan of the M24 stock though, it has a big fat palm swell and round forend like the 700P stock and they don't work as well for me as others. O'm not a big fan of the XLR but its a good chassis. I love the AICS, tough as nails and has great ergo's but they're pretty heavy.

I'd take a look at the manners stocks with mini chassis. Stockys has most in stock and they are awesome stocks with great ergonomics. I shot a rifle in a T5 and fell in love with the it. They're right in the price range of the others you are looking at.

I wouldn't put a jewel on anything but a bench gun, they're not field reliable. They junk up very easily and don't go bang. For a hunting rifle I would stick with a tuned old style remington trigger or a timney.

I found the same thing about my HS varminter though i still like it, the palm swell is huge, no getting around it really.

Manners, McMillan, and AICS would be the first three i would look at for stocks. Lately i've been wanting to try a manners T2A or the folder.
