I am pleased to announce the addition of two new Tactical Rifle Matches, a new Highpower shooters clinic, and a reschedule of the 1000 yard prone match to the TRC Highpower schedule! The two new tactical rifle matches have been put together to provide civilian, military, and law enforcement shooters with an opportunity to shoot a prone rifle competition using semi-automatic rifles or bolt action rifles generally thought of as being “tactical” in design and use. The first match program, Mid-Range Prone Tactical Rifle Match, has been designed for “AR-15” based rifle platforms and offers a challenging course of fire out to 600 yards. Bruce Johnson will be the new Match Director for the Mid-Range match, I think many of you know Bruce from his years of shooting many different types of programs at TRC. The second new match program is the Long-Range Prone Tactical Rifle Match which offers a very challenging course of fire out to 1000 yards. Both programs will be run from a tactical perspective. To support the tactical rifle matches and the X-course matches we have added a shooters clinic to the schedule which will be offered 4 times a year. The clinics will be run in a practice session format so that we can accommodate both new shooters and experienced shooters during the same program.

Lastly, we have moved the 1000 yard Prone Match to the four 5th Saturday’s of the year. Traditionally, in the calendar the 1000 yard match is the day after the NRA X-course match so it makes it difficult for shooters to schedule and pretty exhausting if you want to shoot both matches in the summer. Ron Zerr has volunteered to be the Match Director of the 1000 Yard Prone Match. Ron has just relocated to Tucson from Texas and he brings a wealth of experience with him, so we’re looking forward to seeing more shooters out for the program. Ron is looking for some feedback, so he’s added some questions and thoughts for you to think about and provide feedback on, if you are interested in helping Ron evolve the match program.

I’ve put in the new schedule, below and all of the changes are already up on the TRC website Calendar.

Mid-Range Prone Tactical Rifle Match

Match Director: Bruce Johnson [email protected]
Pit Boss: Bob Ahrendt

The Mid-Range Prone Tactical Rifle match is held quarterly on the fourth Sunday of the second month of the quarter. Subject to seasonal adjustments, squadding starts at 0630 (0730 winter) and the match itself starts at 0700 (0800 winter). Normal finish time is noon. This new NRA Mid-Range Prone Tactical Rifle program has been designed to provide civilian, military, and police shooters with an opportunity to shoot an NRA Mid-Range Prone competition using semi-automatic rifles built on an “AR-Platform” and equipment generally thought of as being “tactical” in design and use. The rifles for this match will be configured so as to replicate as closely as possible the tactical rifles (semi-automatic) and equipment used by the United States Military and America’s Law Enforcement Community in “mid-range” tactical applications. Muzzle brakes and suppressors are allowed.
The course of fire is the NRA Mid-Range Prone Tactical 60-shot course. The course consists of twenty slow fire shots at 200 yards. Then the shooters move back to 300 yards for a string of ten slow fire shots and a string of 10 shots of prone rapid fire. Finally moving back to 600 yards for 10 shots of prone slow fire and 10 shots of sniper fire. Unlimited sighting shots are allowed before each stage. As each relay completes the various stages at the different yard lines there are multiple scoring and pit crew changes as the other relays take their turns shooting, scoring, and in the pits.

At this match we strive for a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with the emphasis on learning and having fun. This match is an excellent introduction to Highpower shooting and a way for experienced shooters to come out and hone their skills.

Long-Range Prone Tactical Rifle Match

Match Director: Don Travers (acting) [email protected] 520-270-7322
Pit Boss: Bob Ahrendt

The Long-Range Prone Tactical Rifle match is held quarterly on the fourth Sunday of the third month of the quarter. Subject to seasonal adjustments, squadding starts at 0630 (0730 winter) and the match itself starts at 0700 (0800 winter). Normal finish time is noon. This new Long-Range Prone Tactical Rifle program has been designed to provide civilian, military, and police shooters with an opportunity to shoot a long range competition using semi-automatic or bolt action rifles and equipment generally thought of as being “tactical” in design and use. Rifles will be limited to .35 caliber and must be capable of at least 10 round external magazines. Muzzle brakes and suppressors are allowed. Because this is prone competition, shooters may use tactical front rests such as Harris-type bipods.
The course of fire is a combination of the CMP Sniper and NRA Long-Range 60-shot courses. The course consists of 20 shots at 300 yards, a string of ten slow fire shots and a string of 10 shots of prone rapid fire. Moving back to 600 yards for 10 shots of prone slow fire and 10 shots of sniper fire. Then twenty slow fire shots at 1000 yards. Unlimited sighting shots are allowed before each stage. As each relay completes the various stages at the different yard lines there are multiple scoring and pit crew changes as the other relays take their turns shooting, scoring, and in the pits.

At this match we strive for a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with the emphasis on learning and skill development.

1000 Yard Prone Match

Match Director: Ron Zerr [email protected] 915-494-1892

Ron wants to evolve the 1000 yard Prone Match program so he’s got some questions and hopefully you will all provide some feedback for him. Ron has a lot of experience in the shooting world so we look forward to having him be a great resource for TRC.

From Ron
In order to help set things up, I would like to find out what the desires of our shooters are. Keep in mind, we will have divisions for F-Class, as well as sling shooters. Having discussed things with Don and Larry, we will allow anyone to shoot with an adequate and safe rifle, to include those with muzzle brakes, or even silencers (tactical, or precision-rifle types). As always, part of "adequate" will be safe, that rounds make it into the target, and still supersonic or at least stable (no key-holing). Shooters using muzzle brakes will be required to shoot using baffles, or sufficiently off to one end so as not to disturb other shooters.
