Hi! I've recently purchased a SPS Tacical in .308. This is my first center fire rifle, having a blast with it so far. My question is I would like to shoot a different caliber (.223), where can I get a barreled action to switch out instead of buying another gun?
Any suggestion welcome.

Re: New to bolt action rifle and have a question.

Just want a little variety in shooting, that's all. Plus I'm getting a B&C stock and would like to just switch barrel instead of having to buy 2 stock.
Any good caliber you guys recommend? Would prefer it to be same or cheaper than .308 lol.

Re: New to bolt action rifle and have a question.

I'm sorry to say but you will kick your ass each time you change barrels and actions... lets say one day you want .223 well now you gotta rezero after changing the scope and stock from one to the other once your done with the .223 lets go to the .308 and now you must rezero again... get the point. Buy 2 different guns and shoot them you will be way happier this way.

If nothing else, we are a group of enablers.

I definitely laughed at that one!

I don't look at as enabling, I think Xcross performed a valuable public service to this fine gentleman by pointing out that the problem he was trying to solve was not one of the wrong gun, but one of a gun deficit nature.
Correct the gun deficit and the OP will be a much happier shooter.

Now, to suggest otherwise would be a disservice!

The only way you could do this is if you switched over to a gas gun and had different uppers. That could be your other option. From what I saw you wanted to stay with bolt guns and I would too.

Re: New to bolt action rifle and have a question.

Thanks guys. Yes, I was trying to take a short cut of having a 2 in 1 gun (not feeling like spending $500 for a stock twice). I will listen to your advice and get a used and cheap .223 instead.

Re: New to bolt action rifle and have a question.

If you ever get the itch to start doing long range shooting with your .223 you can upgrade that as you go if you'd like. I'm working on my first rifle right now and having fun. Hope you find a happy medium with it. Good luck.

Re: New to bolt action rifle and have a question.

There are a few bolt guns that switch barrels, like the Desert Tactical, but this one is half dozen grand with two barrels and maybe mounts ... does save on not needing the second scope. Also not in .223.

I ended up with a heavy barrel AR for the .223 and with Mk262 ammo it will make an ok group and provides a good home for my back up scope ;-), besides there are days when shooting with fiends at lots of targets, that the semi works well.

For a sub 308 bolt gun playing with a .243 Win, but more for a longer range rifle to go with the 338 LM ...

Re: New to bolt action rifle and have a question.

I just found out about the MP15-22. It's about $400 and I can shoot all day without hurting my wallet. I'm gonna get that for plinking. My .308 will be reserved for serious shooting and hunting.

you know even with a savage and spare bolt, swapping barrels and actions and any of that should kick in a natural reflex to make your brain not freak out and just buy another rifle. here is the bonus, you can take a friend and introduce someone to shooting or show the wife, g/f - whatever, out to shoot. so its a win win.

and we all know you just wanted another rifle. this was the by far the best cry for enablment i have heard so far, well played sir
