Hi guys I just bought and older Lyman turret press and I am going to set it up this weekend and I see there are 2 and 3 die sets and I am not sure what to get what I am loading for is a Remington 5r 223 And an ar 15 I saw Redding had 2 die sets reasonable but didn’t know if I need a 3 die set

A plain jane full length 2 die set will be just fine.
If you were going with a progressive then there is no real penalty to the 3 die set as multiple operations get performed in the same pull of the handle. But with a single stage or turret press each additional die is just en extra pull of the press handle to split the neck sizing out separate from the body sizing, a waste of time and effort IMO.

I like to get the sliding sleeve competition seater with its micrometer top for my precision rounds so I can easily and precisely adjust everything.
But if youll be setting it once and forgetting it then just the plain seater is fine.
You can also add a micro top to the plain seater, it just doesnt have the sliding sleeve, thats what I have done to all my normal seaters now.

I am gonna set up my turret press for 223 then when I get better at long range and decide to build a 243 or 6mm creedmoor I’ll get a Dillon 550 so I won’t have to change anything on either press

When I started out I wanted a turret press so bad. I wasn’t 100% committed to reloading quite yet and didn’t have the money for one so I got a single stage press. Fast forward years later to now; I’m happy with my single stage. Yes I sure as hell still want a turret for loading pistol but I would not load for precision or long range on a turret. It can be done and is being done very well by some people but if you are trying to squeeze every single little MOA out of a load then you might consider a single press to eliminate consistency variables.

For plinking loads, a cheap two or three die set is adequate. Lee is probably the best value.

The third die is for crimping. Given that you are planning to load for an AR, you may want a light crimp.

The 550:is great, and works well as a single stage for precision loads. Nice having multiple toolheads set up and easily swapped.

+1 on the Lee 3 die set for your ar.
You will want some crimp.
Start crimps on the light to medium.

Last batch I loaded seems I went too far with my crimp.
