I have been looking at the 50 cal subsonic cartridges for a while, and decided that none of them are exactly what I want. I don't like the way the 510 Whisper headspaces, and I don't like the rebated rim and small volume of 500 phantom. Besides those cartridges are really wildcats anyways, so I have started to think about making my own wildcat.

The .510 Ninja will be based on the .408 cheytac/.505 Gibbs. I hear that good brass in now available and while it is a little expensive, it should last a long time. To get the performance I want I believe that the .510 Ninja will be to long to fit in a short action, which is good in a way, since the action will need a .75 inch diameter bolt anyway. The Defiance Machine medium action seems like it would be perfect.

I want the .510 Ninja to be able to propel a 800gr Bullet at 1000 FPS from a 16 inch barrel. I have done some calculations, but nothing is final till I build it.

left to right: .408 CheyTac, .475 Gibbs, .505 Gibbs, .510 Gibbs

The .510 Ninja will basically be a shorter version of the .510 Gibbs.

Re: New Wildcat .510 Ninja

just curious- have you actually used a 510 whisper? What is your intended use? I am all for trying new ideas and if money is not an issue for you then I look forward to seeing your build and results. There is not a very big selection in 800gr bullets- are you molding your own? I have tested nearly all the 50 cal projectiles in my 510 and several have preformed well but the 750 Amax is easily the most accurate. API rounds are by far the most fun.

Re: New Wildcat .510 Ninja

I haven't shot a 510 whisper, I am not invested in that caliber. The 510 whisper might be perfect, but I don't like the way it headspaces it just doesn't look right, although I suppose it may make it easier to reload. Most likely I will end up using the gun for hunting and plinking. It is really wooded around here and I doubt its possible to make a shot beyond a 100 yards or so most of the time. I am probably going to get a walnut hull press anyways at some point, to make my own bullets, and I would like to try making 800gr rebated rim subsonic boat tails. From the price of setting up a 510 whisper it doesn't seem like it would cost that much more to make my own wildcat. I have a decent chunk of cash siting around but I suppose I should put most of it back into the stock market instead of making an another gun...

have you tried the liehigh 808's or the tenx 795's they seam to be 2 of the best choices out there
there has to be atleast a dozen to pick from
lehigh 792,800, 808, 815
lupua 800
tenx 795
barnes 800
boretech 792

im sure im missing a few
it will come to me around midnight tonight

Re: New Wildcat .510 Ninja

I have tried many that you have listed and was not blown away with there performance. The borerider bullets would be the exception as I have no desire to try a bullet that is optimized to a specific chamber- not saying they cant be used in a regular chamber- (I have tried 2)but they are not designed for it. Its nice to see you did your homework looking up the projectiles. Have you tried any of the ones listed in a subsonic platform? If you have I would be interested in hearing your experience and load info as I am always looking for improvement in my rifle.

oh yeah

AAA ammo has the 800 grain harlow bullets also
im sure ill think of another

never done any work with subsonics

i shot fcsa matches thats why im familiar with the bmg bullets
i tried the amaxs and wasnt impressed with them
there weights and lengths were to inconsistent for my liking
they dont like to go very fast so once you find a sweet spot they will shot sub moa @ 1,000 yards but only after spending hours of sorting
