The next Gunslinger event will be held over Easter 2011 at Lake Tekapo, South Island, New Zealand. The competition is shot on metal targets with ranges from about 350m to about 1620m (a mile). Any rifle calibre up to and including .50 - you shoot in one of two Gunslinger Challenges depending upon rifle calibre and its likely effective range.

For the first time, we have a couple of international competitors (hence the early notice), and this is something that may also be of interest to Australians (Christchurch is the nearest international airport). It's a long way to go for most readers here, but there could be someone who'd like tie it in with a hunting trip.

Friday 22 April
Practice Day + Workshops on practical long range shooting (topics still being determined)

Saturday 23 April
Gunslinger Rifle Challenge, out to ~ 1000m (eight stages, round count 40)
Gunslinger Extreme Long Range Rifle Challenge ~ 1620m (eight stages, round count 40) eg .338LM .50
Plus a Night shoot (round count 20)

Sunday 24 April
Reshoot

Some on-site accomodation is available. Camping permitted. Spectators permitted.

The last Gunslinger match, in July 2010, was fully booked with some 24 shooters. This time we're in the same valley but we'll be shooting from the ridge line down into the valley (lots of high angle shooting), and it'll be more of a shoot and scoot format, with stages spread out over several kilometres.

More details on Gunslinger PLRS

This sort of shoot is relatively new to New Zealand, but the last few have all gotten bigger and been even more fun!

Regards
Shane

Re: New Zealand, Gunslinger Challenge, Easter 2011

If I can figure how to get the rifle back to NZ Id be keen to go. Aparently ATF consider an AIAW 300wm a tactical rifle, even though in NZ its just another bolt gun. So they are VERY restrictive about letting them out of their borders. Will do some more looking into it though.

Re: New Zealand, Gunslinger Challenge, Easter 2011

I'd be keen, I'm not sure about the ranges though, seems geared more towards people with huge gay magnum calibres, I shoot a 6.5 and a .223AI and don't think average target distances around 1000m look too promising

What was the hit % like last year. Looking at the match report on your site 2 of the stages had no winner

In July all stages had a winner. Eight stages got set out but you only get to shoot six stages - four stages are common to all shooters and two stages are for either the Gunslinger Rifle Challenge eg for .308, and two stages for the Gunslinger Extreme Long Range Rifle Challenge eg .338 and .50 past 1000m.

The July shoot had about half the targets at 600m and 700m, with the other half further out.

At Easter each Challenge will have eight stages each to shoot.

Re: New Zealand, Gunslinger Challenge, Easter 2011

Well, work permitting, I'll be there and give it my best shot with the .223AI I suppose. I might have to give some 90gr's a go, or just practice a lot with my little 75's

It's hard to follow your site, what was the highest score/highest possible score at the last event.

Re: New Zealand, Gunslinger Challenge, Easter 2011

So nobody shot the mile except on practice day I believe ? Tony shot 1000 yards and won his part Miles , what part did he win and who won the other parts ? Please explain as I wasnt really onto it with how it was scored .
I believe the swaro range finders had a hard time dealing with the glear of snow also -Id would have hated to have anything less than those -still nothin like a section just using a mill dot the eh!
dead eye dick turned up witha Fclass kit -as smart as some of his projectile prices me thinks .Id love to come down but you know how $$$$ it is to fly and stay in the south coming from the beautiful north to the cold south haha

Re: New Zealand, Gunslinger Challenge, Easter 2011

This is encouraging as it increasingly looks like I'll be moving to Wellington for at least a year. If only I could bring my SRS and loading gear from the States

Maybe I can just come help out?

Re: New Zealand, Gunslinger Challenge, Easter 2011

"Mad Max" was pushed back another year and I'm not inclined to work on dancing penguins, so I'm leaning towards the Weta offer instead of Sydney - however "The Hobbit" and "Avatar 2&3" are still quite a ways off so it's likely something else.
