Took the SIG Precision Rifle Course in New Hampshire last weekend. First time shooting past 100 yards. We shot at 100, 200, 300, and 500 yards during the three day course.

It was friggen awesome!

I have a SAKO TRG-22 .308 which I am very happy with. However I would like a second rifle in .223 or 22LR to practice with at my local 100 yard range. I live in Mass so long yardage ranges are rare. I figure I can practice more with the cheaper ammo.

Can you guys recommend accurate .223 and .22 Bolt guns that are reasonably priced?

Thanks!

OG

Re: Newbie Completely Hooked

22LR will be cheaper but the 223 is a whole different animal. CZ and Savage make great affordable bolt guns in 22LR and 17 HMR. A Remington 700 like an SPS would be your best choice for a 223 and can be bought stock or custom/semi-custom. Check out the "For Sale" section here on the hide. Now theres no turning back!

Re: Newbie Completely Hooked

Reasonably priced is a matter of opinion.

22LR's
I like the older Anschutz M-64 type actioned rifles for the money.I paid $425 for one 2 years ago. They have that old world craftsmanship which I prefer over most of the new guns. The CZ's are OK as well.

Tikka T3 for 223 as it is similar to your TRG in a few ways.Specifically the action.

Re: Newbie Completely Hooked

"Reasonably priced" is pretty subjective. But I would say a R700 tactical is in your ball park. Can be had for just over $500 and mine shoots good enough for its intended purpose. The tikka's are nice, but I liked the 20'' barrel on the remington.

A sako quad is a great rifle, and upgradeable with a lilja barrel if you want. CZ is also a good choice. I like taking the 22lr out more then the 223 if I am just going to the range though. My current favorite is a Cooper JSR in 22lr.

Also match grade .223 ammo isn't that much of a savings over the .308 stuff.

Tikka,

Re: Newbie Completely Hooked

It seems like the ballistics on 168gr 308 and 69gr 223 are pretty close out to 600 yds (3 inch difference max). This is with using a ballistic calculator and federal gold match on both rounds. So practicing with your 223, you would use similar drop calculations when ranging with your scope. However, like jbuck said, there is little to savings in ammo cost when comparing 223 and 308 match ammo...

Re: Newbie Completely Hooked

^^^ what he said. cheap, accurate and fun to shoot. And you can find them all day long. I think they even carry them at my local wal-mart.

Re: Newbie Completely Hooked

Thanks for the suggestions. Will check out the Savage 22s.

Looking at Remington as a possibility for .223. Which models are recommended? there are about 40 different 700's on the website.

Dumb question but can you upgrade/customize these rifles at home or do you need a gunsmith? Thinking I would buy stock then upgrade later.

Any recommendations for reasonable semi-custom. I know I am kind of all over the place but I am looking at my options.

Re: Newbie Completely Hooked

I think the CZ 452 or 453 along with the Anschutz 1710/1712 would serve you well in the 22 field. Along with the Savage Mark II. any of these 22's would not really require any custom work to be a great shooter.

As far as a 223, i think the Weatherby Vanguard Varmint special would be a good choice. fairly cheap and a great overall shooter.

Again, i think the 22 would serve you well and they are very fun to shoot. plus i don't cry as much when i shoot 22 rounds (wife beats me less when I spend less on ammo)...

Hopefully my fiance will not beat me!

Thinking of the Tikka Scout; Weatherby Sub-MOA Varmint; or a local shop has a Remington 700P. Any thoughts on these rifles?

Thanks!
