Hi, I recently won a Remington 700 7mm-08 in a raffle drawing and I want to buy a scope for it. I would like a mildot scope thats good for atleast 300-400 yards. I realize with optics you get what you pay for but im not looking to spend over $300 for a good beginner scope. I was shopping around and came across this scope for around $250, what do you guys think? I appreciate any help. BTW I plan on deer hunting with this rifle.

everyone here will most likely tell you the same thing i just did, followed by providing you with this link:

I looked at the scope in the link you provided and I noticed its a fixed power. Wouldn't it be better to have something that it adjustable how how far would I be able to see and shoot accuratly with a 10x scope?

Re: Newbie Scope Help!

for what yo are trying to spend, better go with super sniper i would also suggest falcom optics but those are aout of your price range.

You don't need to change the magnification as distance increases, unless it is to use LESS so that mirage does not obscure your target. As distance increases the size of a target your rifle can reliably hit also increases. Imagine it's accuracy as a cone extended out from the bore. At 100yds that cone might be 1" in diameter, meaning that everytime you pull the trigger in a perfect scenario the rifle will put the bullet somewhere within that cone. @ 1000 yds (10x as far) the cone will be 10" (10x as big). If you can see that 1" dot @ 100yds then the 10" dot @ 1000yds will appear to be the same size when looking through the scope. You don't need to see a 1" dot @ 1000yds any more than you need to be able to see a 0.1" dot @ 100yds.

Variables are handy, it's nice to be able to back the magnification down to 3-4x when shooting something that's moving or when you're shooting offhand and the reticle is moving somewhat. And it's always fun to be able to zoom into 15-20x and "see the whites of their eyes" but as a practical matter a 10x will get it done just fine.

If you want a variable and are willing to invest a little more, the Falcon 4-14 is also a fine optic that will serve any manner of roles for you over the years. Money spent on the barksa might as well be dropped in the trash.

Re: Newbie Scope Help!

Unless you're out hunting or shooting at a 100yd "two way" range, 10x is fine. Most here stay at around 10x for shots between 300yds and 1000yds so it's likely a fixed power 10x scope won't be your limiting factor

Have you decided on what base and rings to get?

I was planning on getting the following...

EGW 1-Piece Picatinny-Style/Weaver-Style Base Remington 700 Short Action Matte

Burris 30mm Xtreme Tactical Picatinny-Style Rings Matte Medium Package of 2 (six screws each ring)

Harris 1A2-BR Bipod Sling Swivel Stud Mount 6" to 9" Black

Sightmark Laser Bore Sight 243, 308 Winchester, 260, 7mm-08 Remington

Just that stuff alone comes to about $200 with shipping.

Re: Newbie Scope Help!

Also after reviewing the super sniper 10x scope some more I have decided to order one when I order the rest of my parts.

Re: Newbie Scope Help!

You will not need the medium rings with the super sniper. Get the low burris rings. Or better yet get the low SWFA SS rings. they are virtually the same thing as the burris rings but are a little cheaper. http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-Tac-30mm-1-Rings-P41851.aspx

If you can afford it go for the 3-9x variable super sniper. It is a better scope in every way. Plus if you hunt if will be a much much better choice than a fixed 10x. http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-3-9x42-Tactical-Riflescope-P41044.aspx

It will be better than virtually any other tactical style scope under $1000.

lol, not even close. They don't even remotely look like each other or share any of the same parts. I guess they are both scopes.

SS is FFP, vs Bushnell SPF. SS is mrad adjustments, bushnell is moa or iphy (not sure which)

so are you saying that the SS is not a quality budget optic? If so you are a little off on your statement

Re: Newbie Scope Help!

I'd get the SS 10x, they (SS Scopes) have always held up for me & my friends. I'd love to get their variable but prefer a little bit more magnification & an illuminated reticle.

Re: Newbie Scope Help!

I came here with the same question on buying a Barska scope and got a lot of flask for it too. After looking into all the suggestions I got I was looking between two, a Nikon Buckmaster and a Vortex Crossfire (because I wanted the Mil-Dot as well). Luckily, Brady from SWFA informed me that the two scopes were practically the same, and that they were having a sale on the Vortex's this week. The link to the site is posted below...just giving you a heads up, as I am also a newbie.
