I've been shooting .22LR for over a year and I'm ready to step up to the plate.

I'm thinking about going to a .223 for a bench gun(thoughts?).

The 3 guns I'm looking at is the Tikka t3 Sporter, 700 VTR and Savage 10 Precision Carbine.

What would you choose and why?

And is there anything I should know about going into centerfires or anything else?

Re: Next gun advice

This really depends on what you are planning on doing from here. If you really want something that will let you shoot a bunch of different situations you might want to look into something in .308. It's still relatively economical to shoot and it will let you get out a lot further than a .223.... just something to ponder.

I'd definitely look into .308. In my experience, the Tikka T3 Tactical and the Savage 10FCP are great starter rifles, and it's hard to go wrong with a 700. I would try to get your hands on one of each at a store and go with the one you're most comfortable with. They'll all shoot well with decent ammo.

Scope selection will be a critical decision. Depending on budget, get the best you can afford. Check the classifieds on this site.

I want to stick with the .223. I don't know why. I've always liked that round when I've shot other guns. I'm not looking to shoot that much further with the .308. I know I will have many guns by the time I get old. In fact my list will go something like this .223, .308, .338LM, and maybe a .50. Start small and make your way to the top, is my motto.

I would most likely stick with my Redfield 4-12x40.
