Rifle Scopes NF 3.5-15x50 NPR2 or Leupld E/RT 6.5-20x50 M5 TMR:

Well, I am at a crossroads in my shooting world. I have come across a deal that's just ALMOST too good to pass up on a Leupold scope. I already have the NF, and it is a bitchin scope and would be happy to keep it forever.

Now, I could sell the NF and buy the Leupold which is FFP and .1 mil clicks (windage and elevation). The NF is SFP and MOA/MOA. (Does not matter which system, I am highly adaptable)

So, would I be selling off a great scope and buying one that is not-so-great? Eventually, I will be attending tactcal matches (once I can get time off). I will also be using this scope on my hunting rifle (300wm) and possible my 22lr 40-XB. I want a fairly versatile scope with magnification to verify the animals I am hunting (yeah, I know: the bucks have horns), but would like to be able to gauge my prey and size them up before I take a shot.

I hope I have supplied enough info for you all to offer me good advice. Let me know what you think.

Also, I know Leupold had a problem in the past with customer service and also machining and quality control.

Why do u think the Leupold ERT is "not so great" ? Look at what is standard kit on the army sniper weapon system, specifically their new 300 winmag. I have the exact Leupold you are looking at on my 300winmag, and it is solid. Tracks perfectly. The TMR reticle is fabulous. Last week I was getting consistent hits on a 14in target at 1350 yds. I consulted my JBM ballistic software, looked at my estimated come ups and wind hold overs. Dialed it into my scope, and bang. I was ringing the farthest steel I ever shot at. I think you would be more than happy with the Leupold.

What I meant by "not-so-great" is that the scope to me is an unknown. I know Nightforce is built like a tank, performs flawlessly, but is SFP. I have but just a few Leupolds, and they are older VX-3 in a 3-9 flavor that never get adjusted, but have also never let me down.

All I meant is would I be sorry if I sold my Corvette and bought a new sports car that turned out to be a Neon. Thats all.

The NF is going to have better low-light performance, but I feel the lack of FFP is going to hurt you in some matches. There are frequently stages of fire that require less than maximum magnification to shoot fast. When time is critical, you hold instead of dialing.

I say if it's an incredible deal on the Leupold, get it. You may be able to sell the Leupold later at a profit.

I am a NightForce fan. I do have 3 Leupy's and they have never failed me. It seems to me that the 6.5-20X50 might be a disadvantage if you game is close range. In that case the 3.5-15X50 would be better suited. Additionally whether is 15X or20x for longer ranges is not that big a difference. I rarely use my 6.5-20X50 EFR much over 15X.
So when all is said and done I'd choose the NightForce,just MHO

I don't know where the OP hunts but I've used a Mk 4 6.5-20 hunting deer. One shot was at about 150 yds - no problem with bullet placement on 6.5. The other was really, really close and I could not see the whole deer in the scope. If close is a possibilty, then something with a lower bottom end might work better.

That said, the Mk 4 has always been solid with right at 1000 rnds of 308 fired under it.

Ooooh, sorry I missed the hunting part. I don't know if I would want a 6.5x bottom on a hunting stick.

I have Leupolds and like them as well as the TMR reticle but having a 6.5x base power might be high unless you hunt in pretty open country.

fwiw - the Bushnell HDMR (and others) is similarly made but has a lower base power.

are matches shot in the dark? Ive never needed an illuminated reticle, in a match, or hunting.

Some LE/Mil Matches have a low-light stage. Most don't. I generally prefer illuminated scopes, especially in FFP.
