Newbie and just getting started in LR Shooting. Have shot a lot and know basics of shooting form and I believe I have a good starting gun in my Savage 10FP .308.

I recently got what I would call a great deal on NF 3.5-15x50 F1 Mildot with Zerostop and 1.0 moa elevation and .50 moa windage turrets. I plan to use the gun for long range recreational shooting and anything I can have fun with at the range or field (coyote hunting and mid-range deer hunting).

I've tried to search and research good information on setting up 1.0 moa scopes but can't find anything. Does anyone have any experience they can share with me with respects to how to best use the turrets? This scope's elevation turret starts at "0" and goes in increments of 5 to "55". I believe I understand the concept of "moa" but would like to maximize the ability of this scope and myself.

Thank you.

The Mk13 version has 1 MOA turrets, I have posted pictures of them. It's a mil spec model.

You need to establish your dope and then determine what adjustment you need to hit the intended target, dial to said MOA.

Re: Nightforce 1.0 moa turrets use

Thanks for the feedback gents. Lowlight, my scope does not have the "caliber specific" turret so it does not have the yardage hash markers, I may consider doing that for my .308 as I know they make a 168 gn specific marked turrets.

If I did my math right for doping the moa's I believe I am going to be able to get to 1000 yards with only 42.1 "clicks". I know I give up precision, but how cool will it be to be able to dial up and down quickly for recreational shooting and, of course, be able to hold over a bit if needed using the Mildots. If any one has any other advice or feedback for this scope would love to have it. Great Forum and can't wait to be to the point where I can be a contributor. Thanks again.

Re: Nightforce 1.0 moa turrets use

I think you might be confused about how to use the scope. As Frank stated, the objective is to shoot your rifle and figure out how much elevation your gun and particular load/ammo needs for each distance (your dope). 168gr loads out of my gun take 35.25 MOA to get to 1000 yards so I dial that. (Not sure what "yardage marker" you are refering to.) At 500 yards, it takes 11.5 MOA so I dial that. My 175gr loads are slightly different so I dial what they need for each distance when shooting those. There is no "set up" other than zeroing the scope and shooting it at each distance to figure out your dope for whatever ammo you shoot. A ballistics chart might help you get started.

Hope that helps.

Except if he dials wind then I guess it would be "half clicks".

Re: Nightforce 1.0 moa turrets use

I think he's wanting to know how to set it up.

First thing is you'll need to learn how to adjust the turrets and zero stop. Then once your on the range with the Allen keys you need etc zero the rifle set the zerostop, then set the turret to read 0. Fire to confirm zero. If you did everything right you can now dial your range for whatever distance then turn it all the back down to the zerostop and be right back at your 100yd zero. The windage you just zero out once set. You just take your drop in MOA and dial it in by turning to the corresponding reading on the turret. I hope that's what you were asking

Also a BDC cap is not the way to go.

Re: Nightforce 1.0 moa turrets use

my picture shows a BDC cap for the A191 load that was used by the Mk13, I have since removed that replaced it with a straight MOA adjusted cap.

it was just a reference, and actually a quite old photo, the ones from Crane had the BDC because they were not changing ammo often.

Re: Nightforce 1.0 moa turrets use

Thanks again for info everyone. DirtyRod, here is where I got the "42 clicks" at 1000 yards (I know now not to use "clicks" but will "dial up"...rookie mistake on my part).

Using 168 gn Federal Match Grade drop table and figuring on paper what my adjustment would be, I came up with the following number (won't share all of 100-1000 but just a few).

300 yds - dial to 5.6 MOA (OK maybe 5 with hold over)
500 yds - dial to 13 MOA
700 yds - Dial to 23 MOA
1000 yds - dial to 42 MOA

These are just approximations on paper based on math, I know I will need to shoot my gun to see where what my actual "dial" number will be. I guess I found out what I needed, and that is that I will hopefully be able to shoot out to 1000 yards in less than one revolution for this scope. HillbillyfromAL thanks for tip on BDC turret, I will stay away for now.

Re: Nightforce 1.0 moa turrets use

Looking forward to going out and shooting this weekend and I think, with help from everyone that I might have a good idea of where to start with using this scope. Any other ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
