I'm going to order a new scope. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the 5.5X22X56mm high speed turrets, and I'm trying to decide what reticle to go with. I have a 3.5X15X50mm with a NP-R2 now, and I'm leaning that way. But I'm worried I might be missing out on the NP-R1. I'm mostly shooting it on a 40X rimfire at 50yds, but sometimes we like to shoot out to 200yds. I guess my question is: do you think the NP-R1 would be too busy for rimfire shooting or not? I do not use the reticle for ranging. I know I would probably be better off with a benchrest scope but I really like the NXS scopes best. Thanks, Shane

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

If you hold off get the NP-R1, if you don't stick with the NP-R2. $0.02

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

I have NP-R1 and like it a lot. Having 1 MOA on elevation instead of 2 is nice for fine adjustments when punching paper. It is not too busy for me because there are longer hashes every 2 MOA and large line for every 10 MOA.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

i shoot the npr2.. that said the npr1 is pretty nice too,i just find it a little busy for my purposes, but it's nice to have the 1moa hashmarks on the elevation if you need them

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

You might be better off with a lower powered scope for primarily 50 yard shooting.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

The NPR1 would be my choice, as long as you don't get lost in the reticle.

BTW we had a shooter that used a NF 5.5-22x56 on a 22lr for tac matches. He found that he couldn't focus at 50yds in the higher magnifications.

1. Stick with a benchrest reticle. You don't need either the NP-R1 or NP-R2 if all you are doing is shooting a .22 at fifty out to 200. Those reticles are for ranging out to specifically 1000m. You will find them both extremely busy and not fine enough for doing the kind of shooting you want to do.

2. If 50-200 yds. with a rimfire is all you are doing, do you really want to spend that much on a scope? I mean if you get a good deal on a Nightforce DO NOT HESITATE to get it. But if you don't plan on using it out to it's potential sometime soon it may be a waste of money. Better said a big diversion of resources.

3. If you plan on taking these skills out a lot farther then by all means I would recommend getting the Nightforce with the reticles you mentioned.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

If you other has the NPR2 I would recommend staying with the NPR2 that way every thing is the same. I'm not a big fan of MOA reticles but I will say I like the NPR1 for the wind holds and the elevation holds. The 5moa spacing on the NPR2 for a wind hold is a killer. If they did 4moa I can understand and work with but I will never understand why they did 5moa.

Nightforce are outstanding scopes and hard to beat.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

Thanks for the input. I still have not decided for sure which way I'll go. I'm going to try to find someone close by that has one of the NP-R1's so I can look at it first hand. As for the expense of the scope, I believe you get what you pay for. It will not be out of place on top of my 40X. If my wife knew what I had spent on it already, I believe she would shoot me. Custom Lilja tight bore barrel, McMillan HTG stock, Badger 20 moa. bases, Nightforce ultalight rings, Jewell trigger, not to mention what the gunsmith bill was. But it sure does shoot nice and is easy on the eyes!!! I did talk with Nightforce and they told me if the parallax will not adjust down to 50yds, that they can make some adjustments so it will. If anyone else has any more input I would like to hear it. It is a lot of money for a scope and I'd like to make sure I get what I want the first time and not wish I had something else. Thanks again, Shane

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

I put a 2.5-10x32 on my 10/22. I have the NPR2 reticle. Love the glass and ability to do holdovers with the scope.

I think a graduated reticle is great for .22 shooting esp. long range (200+ yards) because you will need to be either holding or dialing to get hits.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

I have both the 5.5-22x56 and the 3.5-15-50 in the NP-R2, love them at 100 yards out to about 300, further my mildot NF's are ideal for hold over. As stated earlier, I would say for your close shooting, I would go with the NP-R2 since you already have one.
For what its worth, of all the NF's I have shot with, the 5.5-22x56 is by far my favorite.

Mike,

I'm not sure how to post pictures here. I'll post some if I can figure it out. Shane

Hell I would go for the 32X. Rim fire is very competitive and at times the higher magnification helps. The lowest power I shoot on any of my rim fire comp rifles is 24X. I am not saying it can not be done. Just that there is a reason that the top rim fire guys have glass 42X and above. I do run the NF 5.5X22X56 w/NP-R1 on my 308 and love it. I think you will not go wrong with it. (It is almost a guarantee that if something happens and you need to sell you will get most of your money back) FWIW I have made shots at 25yrds with the NF no problems with focusing.

+1 on this, i have two NPR1's and one R2, personally I like the NPR2, like stated above, there are lots of "hash marks" going on with the NPR1.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

The R-2 is a terrific hunting reticle, not worth a crap for Tactical shooting. I have the R-2 on hunting rig and it's perfect.

Let me re-phrase, it's just not optimal for tac shooting. The R-1 is the way to go

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

I have the 3.5-15x50 on my TRG-22, and the 5.5-22x56 on my TRG-42/338. Both have the NP-R1 reticle. I don't find them busy at all, and when the light is just not right, and the background is dark and sometimes I can't see the hash markes very well, that's when I wish I would had gotten the Mil-Dot reticle.

I shoot out to a 1000-yards with the 3.5-15x50, and no issues there. So IMHO I don't thing you could go wrong with either scope, but the lower powered NF might help you focus at the close ranges.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

Stick with what you already know, I would go with the NP-R2 myself...

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

Thanks Guys, I think I'm going to go with the NP-R2. I had a chance to go to the range today and shoot a 5.5X22X56 with the NP-R2 and it was real nice. Here's a few pictures with it on my 40X.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

Nice setup.
I love a fine rifle, especially rimfires. I have a Mark XXII with a VX-3 6.5-20x40EFR on it that is one of my favorites. I sell guns and optics so I frequently mount scopes and sight in rifles for customers and get to shoot a lot of them. Wait til some kid sit's down beside you with a sporter weight $150 Savage with a $35 BSA Sweet whatever plops down and starts shooting 30 shot groups inside your best effort with $2 a box ammo. I hate those days. I also love it when that kid is me schoolin' some old codger with his competition Anshuooper on an off day.

Leupold sells a 50' adapter for their scopes. One day I'll ask Night Force if they have anything like that for their scopes.

One day I plan on a top shelf Cooper M-57 for myself.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

Maxwell,
They are Nightforce ultralights .885.

Hired Gun,
I know what you mean about having a bad day, but I don't know many that will out shoot this one even on a bad day. I also have a Cooper M57 sporter. It is one nice gun, fit, finish and feel are awesome. And it shoots almost as good as my 40X.

first, happy 4th and thank you for the answer.

it is interesting you mention you have a cooper and your setup that you now have would out shoot it. i too have a 57 ltv in 22lr. i thought of a nightforce benchrest or even a us optics scope. i'm 61 and after grunting code (programmer) for over 25 years the eyes can use all the help that i can afford them. please try not to laugh to much about my scope 'wants'.

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

I hear you Maxwell. I'm a few years junior to you, and find my eyes are not what they used to be. I have thought about the Nightforce benchrest scope also but really didn't want to go that high in power. I wish they made the NXS that would focus down to 25 yds. Good luck with your scopes and I would never laugh at someone about their optics choice! I'm a optics addict and I need help!!!!! Shane

Re: Nightforce 5.5X22X56mm

For your purpose I'd say stick with the NP-R2. But I do love my NP-R1 and wouldn't trade it. To me it's just right, but I've got a couple hundred hours of glass time using the NP-R1. I swear I see it in my sleep.
