I'm thinking about buying this scope from a hide member. It would go on a Savage 110 FCP 338. After reviewing the specs I noticed it only has 65 MOA of travel. With a 20 MOA base will this be enough to let the 338 stretch her legs?

I was also thinking about a LaRue LT112 to give it another 20 and to allow me to swap it to another rifle easily. However I'm not sure if the 56mm bell will clear the barrel with 40 MOA total cant.

Any suggestions?

It would be tight with just the 20 MOA base, its roughly 65 MOA to get to 1700 yards..kind of depends on how far you want to shoot it.

Figure 65 in the optic / 2 + 20 = 52.5 MOA. That would get you to about 1500...maybe.

The 5.5-22 might be a better choice, it has 100 MOA built in. Personally I don't like combining MOA in rails and mounts, I guess its fine, I just don't like to do it.

Also, don't forget that the 32x is indexed at 22x, so in order to use hold over to get you further, you'd have to be at 22x.

I think you're right. The 5.5-22 might be the better option.

I'm not sure what the mirage is like in AZ, but here in TX it can be pretty bad and extra zoom just amplifies the effect. I had a 32x, never really ever used it past 22x. Personally I found it to be a PIA to find 22x for ranging and hold overs compared to my 5.5-22x where you just crank it till it stops.

I'm going to take your advice on this one. The 22x just makes sense for this application.

Now I've got to sort out the ring height. I can't find the diameter of the bell for a 56mm. Anyone know it offhand? I think we could just add 6mm to a 50mm bell diameter if the tube wall thickness and design are the same between the scopes. I'd like to order the scope and rings together.

You will not be disapointed in the 5.5x22. I started with the 32x and since have swapped to the 22x and not looked back. The extra adj. and lower power have come more in handy than the extra zoom. Good luck
