Maybe it's just me, but does anyone think that the reticle is a bit too thin when you're sighting on a dark object? A couple weeks ago, I was shooting at a darker target at about 200 yards and had a hard time picking up the center of the crosshair. I had my Leupold 8.5-25x50 M1 MKIV and Vari X -III there and had no similar problems, regardless of magnification. This wasn't the first time I had problems with this scope either.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

Did you use the illumination fuction to help contrast the background? I use the illum during daylight whenever I have a hard time picking up the reticle. For me, it is probably less the reticle and my eyes just needing new glasses.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

Also, have you done the proper setup per manual on focusing the reticle against a white object etc? If you have already done that then that is what the illumination is for in the dark or against back grounds.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

Which power are you running?

I have definately noticed this. It is not so bad on my 5.5-22 npr1 but is a problem on my 3.5-15 npr1. I was going to use my3-15 for hunting but not now.
I am exploring different optons for a 10-15 max power optic(npr2, us optics moa type 1, NF velocity)I know mil would work nice but I have tasted the moa coolaid and am hooked!!

I hear everone saying you can turn on the illumination but batteries do fail and always in a critical moment.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

All depends what you use it for. I find the reticle on most scopes to be too thick. They cover up my aiming points at 1k or precision paper stuff. I like the thicker reticles for steel though.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

While I said batteries and electronics fail, I have to ammend that with this statement: The NF scopes I have had(six in all) have never gone dead or failed to work.

My Leupys however were always going dead!!

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

I've got a NP-R2 in a 3.5-15 and it's the same thickness (thinness?) as the NP-R1. I had the same problem.
I went back through the ocular focusing procedure and it blackened the reticle up more and helped a lot.
Np-1's for me from now on.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

Well, I got it for $800 used, so no instruction manual. I adjusted the diopter adjustment and side focus to bring both the picture and reticle into focus simultaneously, so I assumed I'm ok there.

This was only a target, during daylight, so the illumination was useless - yes, I did try. I don't believe there's anything wrong with my scope, I think it's just an issue I have with the thickness of the reticle.

I tried all variables when attempting to diagnose MY problem. That included running it through the range of powers, I tried it against a white background, it was fine, transitioned back to the dark target and promptly lost the reticle again.

So it's me. Enough of your responses kind of make that clear to me! Maybe instead of not using my glasses (minor near sighted), I'll use the glasses and readjust the scope.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

set the paralax to infinity

point the scope at the sky and adjust the diopter so the reticle is sharp as it can be, NOW CLOSE YOUR EYES, open eyes and recheck, readjust, if you leave your eyes open through this process they focus to the scope, we want our scopes adjusted to our eyes

lock it down and your done with it

the reticle is not too thin, I can see the reticle just fine on mine at 5.5 with it pointed at a F class target 1k away at dusk

this was really hard to find

Selling it to me for 800 might fix it too.

Re: Nightforce NPR1 Reticle Problems

I have "lost" and or been slowed down by my NPR1s when hunting against some shadowed and or brushy back drops.

The illumination factor isn't very helpful in daylight.

I use the NP2DDs for varmints now. It's a great reticle if you can rely on a laser rather then the reticle for ranging.

The FC2? (circle and dot)reticle is fast and nearly impossible to lose, but it covers a bit much at long range for small critters. It is however, the best slug gun/muzzle loader reticle I have ever used! (2.5-10x32)

I REALLY wish NF would make the center of the NPR1 reticle symmetrical (add or subtract a set of hash marks)and double the thickness of all but the very center. (or replace the center with a .25moa dot)
