Hi, I was wondering if anyone owns a Nighthawk here that can comment on the final smith work on it.

I just picked up a T3 compact for carry and I'd love to compare notes with someone on a few items related to the slide recesses for the frame engagement as well as the outside of the barrel work for engagement to the bushing and the slide stop holes in the frame(3 in total).

I have a Talon built this year that is just perfect but the T3 I have has me a bit disappointed.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Nighthawk Custom 1911's.

I would recommend sending it back to Nighthawk. I have a Dominator that's three or four years old. Last year one of the tritium inserts fell out. I contacted Nighthawk and Tim Lehr sent a Fedex pickup ticket. I had a couple of updates done while it was there and offered to pay the shipping, but Nighthawk paid both ways.

S&W paid shipping both ways on my M&P when it needed refinishing under warranty.

I'd venture to say that all good gun manufacturers do the same.

I haven't seen much problem with Nighthawks. I've seen one that took a couple of tries to get flawless, but otherwise, they do a good job. And I know I've never felt smoother moving slides. Most of my experience has been with the Talons though.

Re: Nighthawk Custom 1911's.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got attacked on a 1911 forum just for asking for reference pics so I can compare them to mine before I talked to Nighthawk.

(to NW1911guy): I have a Talon too that is just perfect. I was so happy with that butter smooth Talon that the T3 I purchased was a custom order that was spec'd out to look just like my Talon, for all argument's sake..

There's just an obvious machining difference between the two pistols in a few areas.

Very interesting. I've been looking to step up from my Springers and Kimbers so I've been reading and fondling for the last month and the Talon I fondled over the weekend had the worst action. I was expecting it to feel like it had bearings but some of my guns felt better. Since I could see that it had lube I was either expecting too much out of the box, it needed break in, or that was just an oddball based on all the positive feedback I've seen on Nighthawks. The Wilsons and the one Baer were tied so I couldn't compare.

On the flip side, the finish was fantastic. Made my 5", which spent a month at my local smith, seem like it was assembled down at the preschool.

Odd. I've shot several and the actions made me drool. Though maybe something made it past QC. God knows that seems to happen to everybody at least once in a while. The Baers I've handled have been so tight that it was hard to tell how smooth they were. Seems like Nighthawk's finishes are second to none as well. Lately I've been thinking about the Tactical Carry that they're putting Heinie's name on but don't know if I'll do it or not.

Years ago I had a Kimber Custom Stainless and the blasted finish on it was rather course and lets just say they didn't exactly tape off the slide rails. It was rough enough that even 1000 rds didn't fully take care of it. So I got ahold of a couple of black hard Arkansas stones and made a few passes on the rails of both the slide and the frame and that did the trick. That said, I expect better from Nighthawk.
