Looking for a decently priced scope (read cheap) that is not a POS. A while back I used to have a 700 with a Leupold MkIV but ended up selling it as it was a lot of $ for me at the moment tied into a gun that I got to take out once a year.

With that being said I currently have a Howa 1500 .308 with a 20" barrel and I'm thinking about getting a scope so that it doesn't become a safe queen (ok, it already is

).

So, Nikko Nighteater 6-24x56 MilDot: any thoughts? Comments?

Re: Nikko Nighteater scopes?

they are a (in my experiance) a decent scope for the money. I take care of my rifles and optics but I certainly dont baby them about and hunt hard with them all the time. the one I have holds zero despite what Ive done to it in the past. Opticaly Im not a specialist

Re: Nikko Nighteater scopes?

I had one on my Howa 30-06. I thought it was a POS. After one time at the range and shots all over the place I sold it dirt cheap. I bought a Trijicon Accupoint 3x9 from Liberty optics. It's a tack driver now.

Can you tell us what your budget is?

Nikon buckmasters. Might be a good choice if money is thin. If you can spend a little bit of Money a used Vortex Viper would be a good option.

IMO it's better to cry once. That doesn't mean you need to drop $1500 or more on a good scope though.

Budget... as little as possible

I"m expanding a house right now which means that's where most $ is going but I'm itching for getting the 308 up and running

The sub $300 is really really tempting but I don't want to get on the other hand something that's a POS.
So looking at it from the eother end: what can I get that's fairly inexpensive that will get me 500 to 700 yards?

Thanks

Re: Nikko Nighteater scopes?

My reccomendations:

Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14
Mueller Tac II 3-10
Bushnell Elite 3-12 ffp

In that exact reverse order, they are listed from cheapest to most expensive. I have the Nikon and it tracks better than I can measure. I know of people with the Tac II that track well, and the bushnell has been proven by Lowlight to track well too.

I recommend these because I assume you can't afford a Viper PST or used MK4 leupold (as you sold it one).

Im building a cheap trainer at the moment.

Howa heavy barrel 308 with hogue, EGW base, and falcon menace 4.5-14. I however wouldn't recommend this scope to anyone, its a POS, but I got it cheap, and its tacticool.

Re: Nikko Nighteater scopes?

If your willing to spend $100-$150 more, you could get a scope your not going to have to worry about or question it's integrity. In the $400-$450 range you have a lot of options. Bushnell 6-24x50 sfp (if you can find one), Vortex viper 6.5-20x50, Burris Fullfield II 6.5-20x50 and the Millett TRS 6-25x56 are just a few that come to mind. There's no use in going out for a nice day at the range and having a shitty time because your scope sucks and you wish you would've spent a few extra bucks and got something of better quality. I have owned the Bushnell that I mentioned and it was a great scope I just didn't have a rifle to use it on or I'd still have it.

Re: Nikko Nighteater scopes?

I bought the Howa Axiom in .308, That came with Nikko Nighteater, needless to say i took it off and put the NXS on it. I did however find the perfect gun for the Nikko to go on, my Ruger .22.
