I’m looking for a quality gunsmith in the NJ area to finish a couple of barrels for my new build. Can anyone provide a good lead for a gunsmith in my area (Jersey Shore). I’d like to find someone who is well known in my area if possible. Not sure I trust my local shop since they don’t do much in terms of bolt action work.

Athough its been about a year since I lived in New Jersey I have 2 recommendations. look up KI Precision (Newfield), Kurt is a great guy and does great work.
Another good shop Is Legacy Armory (Cinnaminson) Andrew and Melissa can get what you need done.
I have had work done by both of these shops and they do really good work.

Thank you, I’ll give them both a call Monday! My in-laws are down in that part of the state so that would be a easy way to kill two birds with one shot, drop the kids off and get the barrels fitted.

Look up Williamsport benchrest. This is probably the biggest benchrest club in America and their match results should list the rifle's parts and builders. Several should be local to PA. There are several excellent PA gunsmiths. Look up Borden actions as well while you are at it.

To the OP why do you need to be of driving distance to the smith? Just from my personal experience only and not badmouthing anyone in particular, the best smiths i dealt with I sent them the rifle and most every local one I used was a complete hack including one of them named on this thread. Yes its nice to go and meet them and shoot the shit with them but doesnt mean they'll do a good job.
Any smith in the surroundind state will be an inexpensive one day shipping.
PA seems to have some good smiths lately. Plenty of good ones on this site and
@LibertyArms out of PA is who is doing some work for me currently.

Thanks, I actually was referred to Monmouth arms by another person in my area. I’ll give them a ring tomorrow and check them out.

I like to develop a good relationship with people I plan to give a lot of work to. It’s also nice knowing you have a place near you to get work done in a pinch and not have to wait or trust shipping companies with high dollar items. If you’ve ever lost a expensive item shipping you’d understand and be a little hesitant to ship even being over insured which they always fight like hell not to pay you.

Hey I ship and receive expensive items on a daily basis. high dollar scopes, nightvision, thermals, automatic weapons, ect ect.
Its your decision but best trumps convenience in most cases.

and if you absolutely insist on hand delivery then make a day trip of it.

Unfortunately I have extremely bad luck with shipping things so I’m kinda dead set against it. I’ve had more things shipped to the wrong place, lost, damaged etc and it’s something I’d rather not risk when building rifles. Then you add the bullshit in NJ that every action has to go to a FFL first to pick up. Losing one isn’t an option so I wouldn’t rule out making a day trip for this yet but I’d like to call or go check out the local shops first. I’ll see what my gut tells me and branch out from there. I have 3 rifles in the works all arriving at different times (actions coming a month or two apart) so that’s also a contributing factor to go as local as possible.

Teir 1 does more with bolt guns than Steve at Monmouth Arms. I'd go there first
Yeah I called yesterday and they seem a lot more knowledgeable so I’m going to take a ride there and check them out before I start to branch further out.

Tier 1 does fantastic work both functionally and aesthetically. Mike has built me two bolt guns and 6 ARs, and cerakoted another 4 or 5 handguns rifles barreled actions etc. I recently moved from NJ to GA and I still send my stuff to Tier 1. He also does super fancy Glock work and can laser engrave pretty much anything you could dream up...but his roots are work guns as former LEO and military.

I saw on the news your Gov. is trying to make NJ the first gun free state.
He can go fuck himself while he’s at it, Nobody likes that guy and he’s trying to turn this state into a 3rd world socialist shit hole.
