hi , new guy to long distance shooting and scopes. Here is my noob set up.

remington 700 VLS varmint barrel 308, defiance magazine housing, redfield scope with cheap by-pod. also my bushnell space master spotting scope.

wanting to save up for a SWFA SS scope. with mil dots. any opinions on that?? i am trying to stay below a grand for a new scope. then a new stock. still trying to figure out the math on MOA and windage. need to pick up a notebook for notes and stuff.

shooting from prone most of the time but i do shoot from a bench without a chair. do not like lead sleds and stuff.....also i am a lefty so when i am shooting sometimes my right hand never leaves the bolt handle...

I have no personal experience with SWFA, but I would add a Vortex PST to your list of glass under $1K. Look for a new trigger (if you haven't already) before you upgrade the stock. Head to a few ranges and see if you can get behind some different style stocks and/or chassis systems before you make any decisions.

Nice rifle! Not bad at all for a "noobie rig". Watch the used section for an SS 5-20x, you'll save a few hundred easily. My next recommendation would be to get a rear bag. That'll give your off hand something to do besides sit on the bolt handle.

thanks for the replies and advice.....

ar10, the rifle is 308. i shoot out in maplesville, right now we have about a 400 yard range, but hoping to go 6-700 soon.

thanks for the replies , guys.

well here is the new scope and stock. ended up with a millet. damn thing is huge and heavy but works fine. downloaded the app shooter and started playing with it. the rifle is zeroed at 200 yards. got the solution for 400 yards ,dialed it in. rifle went bang and the gong went BING! my first step into a larger world. the new scope tracks fine, my groupings have improved. last shot of the day, guestimated 650 yards, do not know the true range, i think between 600 and 700 yards. my range finder would not pic it up. dialed in the scope , miss.......it was the last round i had on me at the time...........longest shot i have ever took. missed but still felt good. i am truly addicted to this now.....

thanks, guys.

another noob report.

hit my first shots at 550 yards. got it dialed in, thought it was 650 but guestimated 2.7 mils up and bang. gong went bing. worked on dialing in the scope at 400 then 270 then 550. today was a good day......my groupings still suck though. i can hit 8 inch gongs but can't group worth a crap........

Are u shooting at a range in maplesville or private land? Looking to find a couple of long range spots closer to Tuscaloosa. Just got my first long range gun too. Rem 700 AAC! Still looking for my scope though.
