First off I'll start with saying I used the search function first so as not to bother anyone. Could not find my question. My question is - Some stocks say they have a full length bedding block--Does that mean the barrel is no longer free floated??? Thanks in advance and I apologize in advance if I am missing something very obvious.

Re: noobie stock question.

Hey we all have newbie questions when we are getting started. Yours is less newbie-ish than some of mine were getting started

Ok, the bedding block is an engineered bit of aluminum which is usually either flush with or under the surface of a stock. If you look at something from HS precision or Bell & Carlson, the part that extends to the foreend is essentially a couple of arms of aluminum below the surface.

Generally, the portion of the stock near the barrel still will allow the barrel to extend without touching. Just like any stock, you may need to remove some material to ensure that your barrel channel is appropriate to the barrel that you are using.

The amount of material removed generally is not enormous and does not extend to the level where the bedding block is.

Short answer: no the bedding block adds strength to the stock but should not interfere generally in the barrel channel.
