is "starting a conversation" the same as a "private message"???
or is there another way to get a direct message to someone with a gun for sale on the Px?

Your best bet is to contact a moderator to be sure. A PM is not seen by anyone but the original poster or OP. I think you have to have a certain posting count in order to do any business, but it's all spelled out in the rules at the top of each section with stickies. Hope this helps...
