went to my kid's concert the other day. 4-6th graders. plain nasty singing and music, as you can imagine for average youngster of that age.

the gym was full of 100-200 proud parents, the day before D-Day (especially with the 70th anniversary media blitz one would think this would also be on folks minds), the first song was introduced as "a song that needs no introduction".

from my first row seat, i immediately rose, followed shortly by my wife, when (though barely recognizable played through the beginning musicians instruments) was the first few notes of the Star Spangled Banner.

was amazed and appalled when about halfway through, my wife nudged me said "hey we are the only ones standing". even the teachers were seated.

when the song was completed, turned to the crowd with my hands in the air like "WTF"?

the worst part is the "example" set by the parents and teachers for the kids, and i looked like the weirdo.

36 U.S. Code § 301 - National anthem | LII / Legal Information Institute

whatever people's political views, opinion of how the nation is being ran, or whatever - out of respect for where we've come from and those that we've lost along the way, remember and teach that it's more than a song that starts baseball games or a 3 colored piece of cloth:

Oh, say can you see
By the dawns early light
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilights last gleaming?
Who's broad striped and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare!
The bombs bursting in air!
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there
Oh, say does that star spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

- i guess it also waves over the ignorant and disrespectful too, but it did urk me a bit.

June 14th is flag day, wave her proudly, and to coin a crosby stills nash and young song with a now different point of view "teach your children well" (and maybe a few parents too):

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.

Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.

Can you hear and do you care and
Cant you see we must be free to
Teach your children what you believe in.
Make a world that we can live in.

Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

Thats the beauty of our country, sit stand kneel or lay flat on your back when the anthem plays, you are free to do as you wish.

I must be old, because I still believe that one must stand, remove hat if you have one, and place your hand over your heart. I still sing along too.

I am not sorry for calling an ace an ace. Didn't mean to step on your toes. Even scum bags, free loaders and Walmartians get to enjoy the prize that so many have paid the price for. I do not enjoy the fact that some people will use a right to spit on and disrespect the symbol that stands for that right. I will not step so harshly on your statement next time. I will not short cut at your expense. If you are sorry to call out a shit bag than don't.

My post count could be zero for all I care. Not looking for Hide cred.

I gladly call em out at parades and sporting events if I see it happen. I would hate to have to kick them, dont know if I could get that stink off my boots.

I'm 20 in the Army now, and just a bit over 2 years ago when I was in high school, the only people who said the pledge were myself and the teacher (with an exception of a few non-shitbirds). Not a single soldier below the rank of E-5 even knew the pledge in another platoon in my company.

Those losers wouldn't shed one drop of blood for it much less have ever zipped up a body bag with a US Service member in it, I'd say 50% of the country could care less. No telling where our country is headed, it doesn't look good.

It's a sad day when Patriotism is lost for a large portion of our Country. I suspect a large portion of those reside in the usual East and Left coast states.

Why in the world has Obama not been Impeached yet? Don't any of Our Representatives have any BALLS?

The beauty has a way of revealing the despicable. Also, nothing in life is free...you may not pay for it, but someone did.

Well, I don't give a fuck who you are, who the fuck you THINK you are, what your beliefs are, or who the fuck you voted for, I think you should stand, remove your headgear, place your hand over your heart and if you don't sing along, at least shut the fuck up until the anthem is over to show some respect for those who gave all, those who gave some, and those who still are giving so you can enjoy whatever freedom you currently enjoy. I personally get pretty emotional EVERY time it's sung or played. I love my country and fear my government and that song does it for me. But, hey, that's just like, MY fucking opinion dude.. Know whut ah mean?

It stems back to the time of Egyptian or greek - romans when leaders war helmets to cover their faces from injury, they would walk out to talk to each other before battle & take their helmets off so the other side would know who they were facing & developed from there!

I have always lived in small towns, and EVERYONE stands, removes headgear, and salutes the flag. From little kids to adults, and EVERYONE bows their heads and is silent during the opening prayer. Which by the way there always is before any event. I love small town America, where we haven't forgotten what it that flag means.

Was at my nephew's graduation last night, i believe everybody stood, some with hands over heart (ok by me), but a couple guys and a few gals left their hats on (that erks me, if they are next to me i would politly ask them to remove hat please.

Any one know the roots of hat removal as showing respect.

I'm sure there's not a 100% correct answer, but in one of my history classes in college they talked about how covering one's head was always a religious sign of humility and respect. At some point, Christians actually started UNCOVERING their heads to be different from the Jews (or maybe just to annoy them), and it stuck.
Not showing respect for our country (flag, anthem, etc), while within someone's rights, is despicable. Sad that we have so many now who don't understand or just plain don't care.

Schools are little liberal breeding grounds and training facilities. Nothing more. So it doesn't surprise me in the least to hear this.

Yeah man, all of that education ruins them.

Knowing how to read and write is a very commie idea....to some.

I wonder how many here learned to read and write in the commie public school system? I would say most did. Why would anyone want their followers uneducated? Easier to to keep the flock in line I guess.

Though not a panacea,is nothing wrong with education. Its the brainwashing that ruins them. There is a massive difference between education/knowledge, and wisdom. I have completed Jefferson's statement.

"Knowledge is power" TJ

"Power without wisdom is folly" Maggot

Frankly, I would NEVER allow my child to attend public schools for a number of reasons.

I walked to my daughter's school to pick her up the other day. As we were walking out I see this kid (20ish yo) who is employed by the school district taking down the flag. Once he took it down he draped it over his shoulders like a cape. I said WTF out loud and my wife grabbed me and said it's not worth it. I was pissed. She said "let's call the school". I didn't though be cause the gay (I'm not a homophobe BTW) principal probably wouldn't care either. It's the norm nowadays. This country is being ruined more and more each day. ........ I'm still pissed, wanted to smash that kid's face

Canadians do it right.

This is how we roll, up here. I'll put the lesson up again, for those who missed it the first time.

(just messing with you guys, as being on this thread actually shows your feelings. Still makes me proud though, that this wasn't a "one time thing" up here... it's how we do things.)

Education is brainwashing.
Tetxbooks and curriculum are routinely chosen, based on selective inclusion or omission of certain facts. Not points that are debatable - FACTS, as they pertain to certain ways of thinking.

In other words, Bitch, please!

I think you mis under stood the gist of my statement, but you are largely correct.

“Is education possibly a process of trading awareness for things of lesser worth?”
Aldo Leopold,

I'm old enough to remember when a person would get called out for not standing. I wish it was still that way. Love it or get the hell out!

Its still is in some places. In another thread I mentioned that a horse, show over the Memorial day weekend, saw bunch of young competitors in the arena when they called for the national anthem. One of the little kids started talking to the fellow competitors, jumped off the horse and ran over to the announcer. There was a pause and the announcer asked for everyone to recognize the vets in the stand. All those kids sat on their horses facing the vets in the stands with hat in hand over their heart. These were little kids mind you.

I looked outside the arena while the anthem was being played and all the horses were stopped facing the the direction of the flag with riders hat in hand over their heart. Happens at every show and you darn sure dont want to be called out when the straightfaced 9 year old girl when she asks, in too loud of a voice, 'Why didn't you take your hat off when they were playing that?"

If it was me I would appreciate the reminder, some times I forget I am wearing a hat.

Obviously our fellow citizens are entitled to do as they please. However, I have never served in the military but I have lost friends and family who did. I have one arm and one leg and I will be damned if I do not stand up, even if I have to have someone help me stand.

Sir, you serve as an inspiration to those who take it non-chalantly. My hat is off to you, as well.

Some wild retorts regarding our educational system as it is today. Education, is a wide subject, the Nazi's educated their children, as do the North Koreans, for one to openly embrace all education, is a sure sign of a lack of critical thinking skills, at the very least! No educated person can argue that the average high school graduate today is on par with the average high school graduate of 30 years ago. In fact the ACT tests have been made "easier" due to the average lower scores they were getting over a period of time. Even the TV show Jeopardy has lowered its standards as they were unable to find enough "qualified" contestants. The questions from years ago were just too hard for contestants today! The boom in private schools across the US is also a reflection of this very real situation. Parents that really care about their children's future are in fact enrolling them in private schools. In some locations, private schools can't keep up with the demand. In my day (a million years ago) you could be expelled from school-permanently. In TN today (and I believe in many other states) a scum bag can't be expelled, unless it involves a gun, or terrorist plot. Transgressions such as drugs, vandalism, threats, truancy etc. don't come up to the standard of expulsion. Teachers unions have become the largest and most powerful union in the US-donating 100's of millions of dollars to liberal candidates, they in turn receive higher pay, and job security (no matter how poor a job they do). In fact, just recently a teacher looking a pornography on his computer, in class, was reinstated with back pay, after having been removed by the school administrators ( I believe he was also sending this porno to other teachers via e-mail). He's still teaching the kids in our schools. If you look at almost any University's Catalog, and compare the requirement for a degree in education (provided your school has a college of education) you'll find the requirements are shockingly below the standards of most other degrees (don't know about fine arts). I believe two of the most important reasons private schools produce better students are: Teachers can be fired for poor performance and students are held accountable for their studies and their behavior. I am not in any way knocking the concept of education, only how the education is being conducted. All education is not equal-only the uneducated would argue that. With all that said, I'd bet in those schools (public or private) where the student body has respect for Old Glory and our National Anthem, the over-all test scores from those schools will be higher than those that do not show any respect for our country.
