OCW Test - 100 yds - How much wind is too much?

Don’t worry about it until it starts to get over 25mph Seriously. The effects of wind at 100 are so minimal it’s not even worth thinking about. If you’re having a lot of horizontal spread than it’s shooter related.

LOL! I haven't tried the OCW yet. We had 14 mph sustained and gusts to 25, so I thought I'd best refrain until a calmer day. Or maybe I should've gone ahead with it - then I could blame the horizontal spread on the wind. ;)

You may want to wait til a calmer day and go further distance. 300 or better yet 500 yds would probably give better feedback vs 100 yds. Just my $.02

That would be a ladder not an OCW. OCW is a load development process to be shot at 100yds.

To that point, and with my experience using the above process, if you have a chronograph, wind should’t matter because optimal charge can be determined with a fair degree of accuracy merely anaylizing the chronograph data.

While I agree somewhat, and I shoot all my OCW's over my Labradar and record the data. I do not rely on chrono data solely to find my Optimal Charge Weight. I follow Dan's method and choose based off similar point if impact. Chrono data is another data point to pick my OCW on cartridges like x47L and 6BR that have such wide nodes with many groups showing identical POI.

If the winds are consistent in amount and direction then the amount doesn’t matter. It’s the differences. And at 100 it doesn’t matter unless your groups are in the low single tenths already ala benchrest style.
Your load will have a bigger bearing in the results than the weather. You being the biggest variable still.

If the weather is shit I’m not doing load development.

A light 5mph wind will move a 65 as much as third of an inch at 100, 25mph approaching 1.5”. Honestly, if you’re not capable of shooting small groups load development is probably not for you.

Just wait for better weather for load development be it OWC or ladders.. And don’t true a solver when the winds are blowing all over the place.. You’ll bake in the offset..

I'm with Diver160651. Wait for better weather. I do agree that wind won't affect bullet at 100yds. Though I have shot in winds strong enough to move my target/stand and buffet me at the bench. So, I wait for calm day and also a temp of 70 degrees. Calm day and 70 degrees works for me for zero and OCW. Temp is important, to me at least, because I shoot in temps with a range of 40s to 90s and 70 is a nice middle of the road temp with respect to MV and changes to it due to temps.

Besides, shooting in nice weather is more fun. :) (I am not a competitive shooter so don't need the 'training' or experience in shooting in less than ideal conditions) I will ( have to at times) shoot in wind but that's after I am zeroed and have my load development done.

Guys I promise wind will move your bullets at 100 yards, a brisk wind will fuck an OCW

Agreed. I'm worried about bullet movement but moreso movement of the target. If that target moves when you break the shot, the impacts could show closer or farther apart on that paper depending on the physical position of the target.

If the wind is consistent at, say, 10mph left to right and the target is solidly planted, you're fine. But if the target is floppy, no bueno and the data collected could be corrupted by that target movement.

We have all kinds of opinions here from mega movement to No. My take, if you are questioning it, why not wait for nicer days?
I'd be more concerned with anchoring the rifle, we've all shot on windy days, if you are miserable, the shots taken will be too.
