Just switched to Hornady 68gr bthp for cost and did a ladder test and it's grouping five rounds in three hole groups.Anyway I'm reloading and noticed I have what looks like ogive mark from the seating die.First time I noticed this.Any ideas .Thanks I did take it apart and it looks clean.

Re: Ogive mark on bullet

It is not an ogive mark but a mark from the seating die. It is just where the die bumps into the projectile. I have heard of some RCBS dies doing this.

As far as I know of it is not a big deal.

Re: Ogive mark on bullet

Yep- it's the bullet seating sleeve contacting the bullet jacket. No big deal unless you are having to seat the bullet with undo pressure.
Also- I recommend you disassemble the seating die, remove the bullet seating stem and sleeve, place a bullet into the sleeve and just double check to make sure the bullet tip is not contacting the seating stem in any way.

Re: Ogive mark on bullet

paint the contacting part of your die w.a felt tip_see where the part come in touch w.the bullet, and go with a dremel_the dremel must bear a felt insert (or even a q-tip) + Iosso paste, jeweler rouge or any suited polishing compound_if you don't have iosso or j.r.,sometimes toothpaste can work_if you don't have a dremel, use a wooden stick of the proper size, drill mounted,etc._polish the hell out of it:we know that until now it was clean, but after the cure must SHINE_good work_

Re: Ogive mark on bullet

Better yet, chuck your seating stem into a hand drill. Use a bullet of the same type that you usually load and coat it in lapping compound. Spin your seating stem and gently push the bullet into the stem, effectively lapping it to the shape of your bullet's ogive. Use new bullets in finer compounds to polish it up well, cleaning well in between grits and afterwards, and you're done! Custom fit seating die!
